Jetpack Search Block?

  • Unknown's avatar

Howdy! Jetpack Search is currently available as a widget on the Business plan and up. While great, unfortunately, this limits the placement of the widget in the footer on most new themes.

Are there any plans to make Jetpack Search available as a block that can be integrated better on posts/pages or is there a limitation here that I may not know about?

PS I’m also a bit confused about the availability of Jetpack Search in general. Although I’ve been using it for at least a year and see it on my other WPcom accounts/sites as an upgrade option under Settings, I didn’t find any mention of it in the Support guide on the Business plan or on the pricing page itself. There is a support guide specifically for Jetpack Search but darned if I can understand how what’s written there relates to WPcom users.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Jennifer,

I can’t find anything indicating this is being planned, but I’ve opened a feature request for this with Jetpack. You’re welcome to follow along at https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/17374

PS I’m also a bit confused about the availability of Jetpack Search in general.

From what I can find, this feature is available as an add-on purchase from Jetpack only, and you can buy it for a WordPress.com site on any plan, including free.

That said, I also have it active on my Business Plan site, even though I’ve never bought it. I’m guessing it’s a legacy thing for sites that already had the original version of this feature enabled, but I’m following up with the Jetpack Search team to make sure.

Thanks for checking and adding my request @kokkieh!

From what I can find, this feature is available as an add-on purchase from Jetpack only, and you can buy it for a WordPress.com site on any plan, including free.

When I look at the Jetpack Search option in Settings>Performance on my free site, it says this,

Add faster, more advanced searching to your site with WordPress.com Business

So there’s a bit of a contradiction here.

  • Ah, I think I get the logic here.

It’s only available in the Jetpack plugin, but WordPress.com Business sites do use the Jetpack plugin.

I’ll see if there’s any way to make that more clear.

    Thank you staff-blorbo!

  • I heard back from a developer, and the Business Plan (without using plugins) still has the old version of this feature, which is a built-in feature of that plan.

The new Jetpack Search which was released a few months ago is an add-on you can buy for both Jetpack-connected and WordPress.com sites.

The support page specifically refers to the paid add-on in this case.

Thanks for letting me know, @kokkieh

  • @justjennifer,

About the block, you can use the Search block that’s already included in WordPress, and if Jetpack Search is enabled on the site, it should be used automatically.

The same goes for any search box directly integrated into the theme.

Hm, that’s interesting. Is that also the case for the old version or only the new version?

Sorry, neglected to add that the reason I’m asking is because I did add the regular search block to my site’s front page “sidebar” on the right, but it is the regular search box, not jetpack search. That’s what prompted this thread. :)

  • What’s the URL of the site?

If https://wpcommaven.com/ then that site would need to be either under the Business Plan or self-hosted and have the standalone Jetpack Search plan to use the new Jetpack elastic search: https://jetpack.com/upgrade/search/

Ah, ok. I think I have this figured out.

Searching in the regular search block also displays results in the jetpack search widget in the footer. It just wasn’t very obvious that the two are connected. It does mean though that if you don’t know to look at the widget in the footer you don’t see the advanced search results. :-(

  • Howdy Jen, thanks for that feedback! I’ve let our docs team know that this could use some clarification with regard to the Search Block so they can take a closer look.

Be in good health @justjennifer :)
