Jetpack seems to have killed my access to my blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I logged into my wordpress.org blog hosted on Network Solutions and I attempted to activate jetpack. Jetpack asked me to login in using my wordpress.com account, so I did and now when I try to login to my blog through http://www.freedompark.org/fpc/wp-login.php or through my list of blogs on wordpress.com I get the following error:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7680 bytes) in /data/10/0/93/53/908053/user/928905/htdocs/freedompark/fpc/wp-admin/includes/misc.php on line 439

    I need help!

  • Hi there,

You have a couple of options you can try, and I’ll suggest them in the order you should try them:

    1. Go check this out: http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP

And increase the allocation as suggested.

    2. If that leaves you with the same error message for memory exhaustion, you can disable jetpack manually by going into the file structure and renaming the jetpack directory (it’s here: wp-content/plugins/).

    After renaming, reload WordPress.

    3. At this point, you’ve increased memory and disabled Jetpack, so delete Jetpack from your site (delete the directory from your folder structure).

    4. Re-download and install a fresh version of Jetpack.

You should be error free at this point, but if you get the same error message, let me know!

I kept tinkering last night and was beginning to panic a little, and then I had the bright idea of deleting Jetpack as you suggest in option 3, and I did. It cleared up the issue and I can log in now. However, my blog which was not linked to my wordpress.com account/list of blogs until I tried to activate jetpack still shows up in my wp.com acct. and will direct me to login in from there too. So it seems I am back in operation, just sans jetpack and now kind of nervous to even attempt option 4.

Maybe I should go back and increase the allocation as you suggest and then retry Jetpack, but I guess the bigger question, is jetpack really worth it?

    Thanks for the assistance.

  • Hi Matthew,

You are asking the wrong person, because of course we love Jetpack! There’s so much great functionality with Jetpack, that we really think it’s worth it.

I would recommend increasing your allocation so you don’t have this problem again, and then installing a fresh version of Jetpack. IF you run into issues again (which you shouldn’t), you can always delete the directory again, now that you know what to do.

Let me know how it goes!
