juggling domain mangement, web host, and email host

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a custom domain registered elsewhere that I plan to use with wordpress.com to create my real web site.
I also need to have email hosting. I understand wordpress.com doesn’t host email, so I will need to use another company, let’s say godaddy, to host email.
When it comes time to renew the custom domain, do I renew it on wordpress.com, or godaddy? Do I have a choice or would wordpress insists I keep and renew the domain through them? And if I have a choice, what is the better place to manage my domain?

    One additional question:
What is the advantages of using wordpress.com versus other hosting services that offers wordpress hosting? There obviously must be some; otherwise wordpress.com wouldn’t be so popular.

  • Hi there,

I also need to have email hosting. I understand wordpress.com doesn’t host email, so I will need to use another company, let’s say godaddy, to host email.

That is correct. There are paid and free email hosting options out there. For paid, you can buy a G Suite subscription (old Gmail for Business) directly from us. The most popular free option is Zoho mail:

When it comes time to renew the custom domain, do I renew it on wordpress.com, or godaddy?

If your domain is registered with GoDaddy, you’ll still renew the domain with them. On our end you’ll also have to renew the domain mapping upgrade included in your plan, as that is what connects the domain to your site over here.

Do I have a choice or would wordpress insists I keep and renew the domain through them? And if I have a choice, what is the better place to manage my domain?

This is completely up to you. For most people it’s easier to have their domain, site hosting, and email hosting in the same place, as that means you only need to pay one provider once a year to renew everything.

However, if you already have a domain with GoDaddy you’ll need to pay both them and us, as it’s not currently possible to transfer a domain in from other provider, only to map them here.

What is the advantages of using wordpress.com versus other hosting services that offers wordpress hosting?

We have a complete breakdown here:

    WordPress.com and WordPress.org

Shortly, on WordPress.com we take care of all technical and security maintenance, so you don’t need to worry about software updates, coding or getting hacked and can just focus on your content. The trade-off is you have limited control over what you can do with the site – you can’t edit the code directly and you can install plugins or themes from other sources unless you’re on the Business Plan. With self-hosted WordPress, you have full control, right down to the ability to edit the code itself, but if it breaks you have to fix it yourself.

Most hosts also limit your storage and bandwidth. While we limit your storage for media files based on plan, there is no limit to the amount of text content on your site and we have unlimited bandwidth on all plans, meaning we’ll never charge you extra because the number of visitors to your site has passed a certain level for the month.

Let me know if you have any more questions about this.
