Just bought the domain name, now what?
-
Hi All:
After receiving a WordPress tip that the domain, BrothersKeptApart.com was available, I purchased it for one year for 15 credits. Can anyone confirm the following.
1. Will I receive a notice to pay the 15 credits next year? If not, then where do I pay for the domain name next year?
2. Can I use revenue generating entities like Google Adsense on the new domain? If so then how? Can I still use the WordPress platform?
Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your $15 bought the domain registration and domain mapping, so if you haven’t taken care of the mapping, that’s next:
#1 – Yes, you’ll get reminders starting about a month in advance, at least I do so I assume that’s the standard timetable.
#2 – No to adsense or any other user-initiatied advertising or monetization. As long as wordpress.com is your host, you are bound by all the terms and restrictions in the Terms of Service. (exception for VIP clients, but we’re talking NY Times/CNN traffic there.)
If you move to self-hosting at some point, the domain name remains yours as long as it’s paid up. That’s the cart before the horse, though.
And once you’ve taken care of the mapping, please link your blog to your user name in the forum profile. We almost always need that to be able to help.

Hi EllaElla:
Thank you for your very prompt response.
Please note that given the very severe global economic crisis, and the unavailability of employment opportunities for the forseeable future for many, perhaps WordPress can allow temporary and limited advertising to genuine blogs so that persons in very desperate straits can at least eat. Once the economic climate has improved, and unemployment is back to single digits, then WordPress can revert to its current policy.
I think that in the current economic crisis, everyone should do their part to help. Please reconsider your current stance on this issue.
Best regards.

You’re welcome, but I have nothing to do with it. I’m a volunteer here like most everyone else trying to help. We can’t have adsense on wordpress.com blogs because it’s already running, unless a blogger upgrades to a no-ads option, and only one adsense account can be on each blog. The money to offer a free service has to come from somewhere.
You’ll never see the ads when you’re logged in and your regular readers won’t see them either. From what I understand, they’re not always there. I’ve never actually seen one (I’ve seen screeshots) but I’m usually signed in and I use Firefox (with ad blocker plus) 98% of the time, so I don’t see adsense or any ads anywhere. It’s always a slight shock to visit a familiar site with IE and discover it’s covered with adsense!
Happy blogging.
