Just cannot get advice on losing the Meta widget

    Hello all.

All the youtube tutorials I’ve seen about getting rid of a Meta box seem to bear no relation to what I see on my dashboard. This one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igzy8gHMyNQ and this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R35KWhgbDg , for example, describe processes that I cannot undertake simply because my WordPress dashboard doesn’t resemble either of the ones featured.
Even the answer to the same question given in a WordPress forum left me scratching my head. It talks of a ‘right sidebar’, when my site has boxes for main and footer sidebars (no right or left ones), all of which are empty.

You may think I don’t know what I’m doing and you’d be absolutely right. So any answers involving code are right out of my capabilities – I’m the wrong side of 60!

The ‘Meta’ seems to serve no purpose to anyone apart from me, so I can’t see why it should be there at all. Any help with getting rid of it would be gratefully received.

    Cheers.

The You tube videos no doubt apply to the WordPress.org software rather than here at WordPress.com.
That forum thread you reference is quite old and refers to the wp-admin dashboard which you should be able to reach bottom left of your menu (or, if not, by adding /wp-admin to your site address).

It talks of a ‘right sidebar’, when my site has boxes for main and footer sidebars (no right or left ones), all of which are empty

You have an Archives widget in your right sidebar so it’s not empty??
A widget in your sidebar can be removed via the instructions in that old thread or by clicking on “Customize” “Widgets”. Then either “Main sidebar” or “Sidebar”.

    Hi

Thanks for replying. Yes, you’d have thought the Archives widget would show up along with the Meta one, but that, too, is missing. By clicking on “Customize” then “Widgets” I get a pop-up saying ‘your theme has two other widget areas, but this particular page doesn’t display them’. Underneath that, the Main Sidebar and First Footer Sidebar etc just offer the option of adding widgets, not deleting any already there. I must be doing something monumentally dumb here but I can’t see what it is.

Yes. That’s the page in which all the sidebars are shown empty, and there’s no mention of ‘Meta’ anywhere. The widgets shown are listed alphabetically and jump from Mailchimp to Milestone.

Perhaps it has something to do with the old retired theme you are using. I notice that on the widgets support page https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/ it says:

Why are sidebar elements showing up on my blog that aren’t listed under my widgets?
Some older themes offer a set of sidebar elements. For example, the Nuntius theme offers a search bar and an archives list as default sidebar elements. You will notice that when you go to My Sites → Customize → Widgets these elements will NOT appear among your Current Widgets. To remove these sidebar elements, go to My Sites → Customize → Widgets and add one or more widgets to the widget area. This will replace all sidebar elements with the widget(s) of your choice.

That worked! Thank you so much. Perhaps I should change my theme to one that’s current, too. Although I’m sure it was current two short years ago!
