Just started a second blog – many who try to follow get note that the email address they put in the follow box says ‘INVALID’

Tabby Cat Club Newsletter blog was started by me as a second blog a week or so ago. I set it up with a ‘follow’ widget so club members could enter their email address and receive the monthly newsletter. Many who have tried to put their email address in the box get an ‘invalid email address’ message – however SOME were able to sign up. they have verified they ARE entering their valid email address so why do they get an ‘INVALID’ notice? I’ve tried to figure it out but can’t. Please HELP. We’re losing members due to frustration (mine too!). Thanks a lot……..

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi onespoiledcat,

Many who have tried to put their email address in the box get an ‘invalid email address’ message – however SOME were able to sign up.

Oh! Would you be able to second a couple of the email addresses that haven’t been able to follow by email on tabbycatclubnewsletter.home.blog?

If each one is typed normally (without any additional characters), they will be hidden from public view but visible to staff. We can then take a closer look at what is happening.

    Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for the quick response…….here are two of those who are getting the INVALID EMAIL ADDRESS note:

(email visible only to moderators and staff)
(email visible only to moderators and staff)

I’ve tried to figure out WHY some can get in and some can’t but really am at a loss…..hope you all can help! Thanks again.

  • Hi there,

So, if there is an option to insert your email into a field, that indicates that they are not logged into a WordPress.com account. If you are logged into WordPress.com, all you need to do is click the follow button. I believe the user who have had success were logged into their account.

Do the users who you provided email addresses for have WordPress.com accounts? If so, have them log into their accounts to follow you. Otherwise, have them try to follow you while in an incognito browser and see if that makes a difference.

    Thanks,

Hi Darnell…..thanks for the response. I would guess that not everyone has a WordPress account and probably don’t want to “have” to have one just to begin receiving the newsletter. I don’t know what an “incognito browser” is but if you explain it to me, perhaps I can let those who can’t get signed up know HOW they can without joining WordPress?? You know, it occurs to me that many of the people who follow my other blog (onespoiledcat) don’t have WordPress accounts yet they’re following me there.

This is so confusing……seems like everyone who wants to follow a blog should just be able to put their email address in a widget and be able to follow it.

Thanks – will look forward to your response……………I just want people to be able to follow the newsletter EASILY.

  • Incognito is Private Browsing where the browser doesn’t remember your activity. We usually ask to perform a task in incognito mode when we believe the issue may be cache related. Here is more information for the Chrome browser for example:

    https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95464?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en

I would also recommend having the users try a different browser and see if they have success. I was able to follow your blog both while logged in and while logged out in a private browser.

Let me know if that helps. I will look further into this for sure if this continues to be an issue for your followers.

    Thanks,

Ah ha! Perhaps that’s it – I can ask everyone to try a different browser if they don’t have a WordPress account. I know I’ve read some people have problems if they are using a particular browser and try switching to another one and no longer have a problem – perhaps this is another example of running into that problem signing up to receive a blog.

I’ll let you know what happens Darnell. It’s a strange problem really – seems like (as I said earlier) the easiest thing would be if ANYONE no matter what browser they’re using could do whatever they need to do – PERIOD with the software “accepting” ANY browser and ANY email address.

    Thanks again!

  • I definitely agree Pam, it shouldn’t be a hassle at all to follow your blog. So, please keep me updated on the results, including what browser worked/did not work for your followers. I wasn’t able to replicate the issue, but with more information, I be able to pinpoint what’s going on and ultimately find a fix.

    Thanks!

Hi Darnell – a “mini-update” is that my friend Janet (whose email I included in the earlier email of people who couldn’t get in) was just able to sign up for the newsletter using Chrome instead of her usual Safari.

One small step for man – one giant leap for mankind. I wrote to the other person and told her to switch browsers and try signing up again – she will let me know if it works for her. If both of them have success I will add a note to that effect for others trying to sign up.

Hope that’s a clue for you to maybe be able to investigate another angle!

    Pam

  • Awesome! Great to hear! if your other friend has similar success, please let me know what browser did and did not work for them. If it is the same as Janet’s, then we might be getting somewhere. :)

    Keep me updated!

Hi – just heard from the other one who couldn’t get it – I told her to try what worked for Janet. She switched to Safari from Chrome and STILL couldn’t get in with her gmail email address BUT she changed to an icloud email address and COULD get in. So maybe that’s a clue……….definitely switching browsers might be worth trying at this point until you maybe find out anything else I need to know!

Have a good night – thank you again.

    Pam

  • I’m glad that they were able to get in – thanks for the update. We’ll look into this and feel free to let me know if this issue continues with future followers. The more info we can gather on this, the better.

    Have a great weekend!
