just trying to upload word content – keeping the formatting – should be basic!
-
I want to paste from my word document – and keep the original formatting – text size, shading – rather than have everything homogenized.
Then when I attempted to insert the document, all that showed up on the post was the title of the document – not the attachment’s content.
Thank you.
(I don’t know how people not already in the know can figure out how to use this entire service – to me it is awkward and not explained enough.)

You can’t. Word is NOT a web program, it is for print media and the junk code it creates kills websites which is why wordpress automatically strips it out.
Get Windows Live Writer, a free download and then compose in that and you can even post directly from it to your site here.
Go here for a good start on using wordpress.com: http://learn.wordpress.com/ .

Microsoft WORD is not web compliant. http://en.support.wordpress.com/microsoft-word/ If you have been copying and pasting text from elsewhere without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor, please see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text
http://en.support.wordpress.com/microsoft-word/#using-word-cleanlyGo to Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.”
The attachments in a WORD document on your own computer cannot be displayed unless you upload them into the WordPress.com servers. The following processes are outlined particularly for users who wish to upload a document and add its download link to a blog post or page. If you are seeking to simply upload a document to your blog’s Media Library (no download link), you can check out Media -> Add New in your dashboard. http://support.wordpress.com/media/media-add-new/
If you want to embed the document itself, you will have to use a third party application like Scribd or Google Docs. Otherwise, the documents will appear as a download link.

Windows Live Writer (WLW) by Microsoft is an application for composing and managing blog posts. You can write your posts offline and publish them in your blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/windows-live-writer/
