Just want to choose thumbnail images for posts, that's all…
-
Hi — I just want to be able to choose a thumbnail image for my posts. Not for Facebook, not for any other purposes, just for the posts, on wordpress.com. I can’t find ANY way to do that. Plugins don’t work on wordpress.com and I haven’t found the ‘function’ file to insert the appropriate code. My theme supposedly has featured images (though I can’t find that under ‘screen options’). What am I missing? :(
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There’s nothing preventing you from uploading thumbnail sized images into any post or page on any blog wearing any theme here.
You ought to be able to upload image files into posts and/or pages in two ways: by going to Media → Add New from your dashboard http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/media-add-new/ or by clicking the new Add Media button right above the editing area of a page or a post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-media/For details about the options for uploading images see:

Note: Misty Look is a retired theme http://theme.wordpress.com/retired/mistylook/ Misty Lake replaces it http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/misty-lake/

Thank you, timethief. Glad to be among the many others you have helped here.
I much prefer Misty Look and would like to keep it. (Switching to Misty Lake temporarily was rather unpleasant. I saw your discussion with other users about this same issue.) So yes, I easily upload media. I just can’t choose which image will appear on that right-hand widget (the one that says “most used” — see it?). It’s invariably the last image of the post. Any way for me to influence that?

(It would be particularly cool not to have to upload an image into the post itself, yet still have a thumbnail for it.)

Hi again,

No there isn’t except if you notice that the first image in a post is being displayed then I guess you could keep that in mind when uploading images. Here’s the support documentation on the Top Posts and Pages widgets and how you can set it up > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/top-posts-widget/

That’s impossible. How could the software determine which thumbnail image to display for any post that has no image in it?

Thank you. I guess it’s just a matter of an outdated / retired theme, then (Misty Lake does have a “featured image” function, which I think would solve the issue; Misty Look doesn’t.)
All clear, then. Oh, re: not uploading images, I just meant not to DISPLAY an image in the post — just to upload it for a thumbnail function. Thanks again.

I use Misty Lake. The featured image option does not address this issue of yours at all.
