Keep domain registration with free plan

  If I downgrade to a free plan but have my domain registered through Automattic, will I still be able to keep the domain registration with WordPress?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Hello @senordeer,
  When you downgrade to the free plan, you will loose custom domains like example.com registered via Automattic. Because custom domains are optional upgrades which are not a part of the free plan.

  Also, older links which will use your custom domain will no longer function. You will have to go with the option of using the free .wordpress.com sub-domain with the free plan.

  Hello,

  You need a paid plan in order to use a custom domain. When you downgrade to the free plan, your site will revert back to its free WordPress.com address (example.wordpress.com).

  There are no custom domains registered to the account you are logged in to.

  Great thanks for the replies! I’m actually referencing another account, and I might not have been clear, what I want to do is to build a new blog on wordpress.org and then just point the domain (registered through Automattic) nameservers to the new blog host (eg. Godaddy). So I wouldn’t even be blogging at wordpress.com anymore hence would not need the upgraded plan, but I would still need to keep the domain registration and have access to the DNS, can you still access and keep domain registration feature with a free plan? Thanks!

  @senordeer, custom domains are not a separate upgrade, they come as a free credit with all the paid WordPress.COM plans. So even if you do not blog on WordPress.COM you will have to buy a plan in order to register a domain and have access to it’s DNS.

  Hello,

  can you still access and keep domain registration feature with a free plan?

  Domain registration is only available with a paid plan (Personal, Premium or Business). Renewing the plan will also renew the domain.

  @gemmacevans, just to clarify, if someone leaves WordPressdotcom, in order to keep the domain name registered through WildWestDomains they need to continue paying for an upgrade plan?
