Keeping content on top – Sticky posts?
-
I’ve now worked out I need to use posts only to make my blog design work, with categories in the menu and related in the posts.
However, I wanted a set piece of text at the start of each lot of blog posts (hence why I originally had built pages too), just pointing out what’s in category and that some content dates back several year so is very basic. Is there some way of doing this in a post so it stays right at the top of the blog feed for each category? I saw mention of sticky posts in another post here, but can’t find anything about them to know if this is what I want or how to do it.
Thanks!

Hello there,
In regards to how to make a particular post ‘sticky’, all you would need to do, is select ‘Stick to the Front page’ option, just above the ‘Publish’ button of your post.
You can see it in more detail here:

Cheers

Hi
That’s good, but I want to “stick” them to the front of each category rather than the front of the blog, if possible?

Let me see if I understood this correctly:
* you would like to click on the different categories you have in your left, sidebar menu, and when in that category, you want corresponding posts to appear there?
If yes, then you can create the categories that correspond with your menu items. Every time you create a new post, give it the category you need, (from the menu item names you have created), and it will display under this menu item.
You would essentially creating the same categories with your menu items! You may like to have a look through this useful guide on categories here as well:

Thanks :-)

You can try both methods, ie. sticky posts, (the one’s you want anyway), and categories/menu as above and see how this works out for you.

You’ve been so helpful re categories, I really understand them now and am re jigging them. But can you just confirm whether a sticky post will go onto the front page of the website or to the front page of the category (as it were)? If the former, is there any way to set to the latter?
Sorry to ask so many questions!

Hello :-)
I’m happy that you now have a better grasp of this :-)
In regards to the ‘sticky posts’, after doing some experimenting myself, I can confirm that once you declare a post to be ‘sticky’, it will stay on top of the front page, but not in its ‘category’ page. These are displayed according to publishing date, (newest to oldest).
A workaround method for this, is to manually change the published dates of the posts you need to have at the top of your category page.
So if you go to the post you are after, on the ‘Publish’ panel on the right of your visual editor, click on ‘edit’ after the ‘Published on…’ option.
You can set this post to be your newest published one, so it can always display on top.
It is a bit more work if you have a lot of posts, because every new post you create, you have to manually set it, ‘before’ the published date of your ‘sticky post’.Hope this helps clarify this ‘sticky’ business.. :-))
Have fun :-)

Thanks for all your help on this. I discovered a surprising thing on setting up my categories – it appeared that the category descriptions I put in were showing up on the page! So I just entered the text for each category’s sticky into the description, then it’s always at the top. Much easier I think! Saves having to change its date. My theme is Sapor, just in case you come up against anyone else as weird as me wanting to do the same weird thing in the future!
Have now managed to set up all the categories and posts in the right places for the existing stuff, and it’s looking good so far. Thanks so much for all your help – without it I would never have managed! -
Great..very happy that it worked out! Don’t worry, there is never really a ‘weird’ request and there are always solutions/ answers to everything!
All the best:-)
