Keeping Featured Images Full Sized
-
I’ve been having this issue for a while now, but it’s gotten worse recently.
I want every single featured image for my posts to be full sized – and stay that way. I’ll set the image as the featured image and set it as full sized. When I publish the posts, they either revert to the large size or they start to load as full sized then change to large. It’s been incredibly frustrating. I’ve tried in the app, in Safari, and Chrome. I’d appreciate any assistance with this. Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, I see you’re using Blank Canvas on your above site. https://wordpress.com/theme/blank-canvas-blocks At the bottom of that page it gives recommended image dimensions.
What size image are you uploading for your Featured image and where are you setting it as “full sized”? https://wordpress.com/support/featured-images/
-
Size is 500 by 281, and I’ve been trying to set the image as full sized in both the WordPress app and in browsers.

Hi there,
Are you speaking of featured images for posts listed on the front page, or when you’re looking at the single post view, for example, at https://switchiton.game.blog/2022/05/25/cat-cafe-manager-nintendo-switch-review/?
Looking at that post specifically, the image is displaying at full size – the size at which it displays on that post is the same as it is when I view the image file itself at https://switchitongame.files.wordpress.com/2022/05/25a7c6b5-3239-4c76-a03f-eb636b8729ca.webp, which is 500x281px as you also described above.
Here’s how it looks to me on that post:
If you’re seeing something different, can you take a screen shot and upload that to the media library for me?
Or if you perhaps mean something different when you say full-size, can you share some more details on how you want it to look?

Hi there,
I see what you’re describing. This is happening because the images you’re using are relatively small in most of those posts.
For example, in this post https://switchiton.game.blog/2022/05/25/cat-cafe-manager-nintendo-switch-review/ the featured image is only 500 pixels wide.
On this post https://switchiton.game.blog/2022/04/16/rainbow-billy-the-curse-of-the-leviathan-nintendo-switch-review/ the featured image is 1500 pixels wide and is displayed in full when viewing all the posts.

This is what I see on the OP’s front page when looking at that particular post (temp screenshot) when inspecting the image, Firefox 100.0.2 says the featured image is being displayed there at 620 pixels wide.
Here’s what it says in Blank Canvas’ Showcase page
Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels):
The main column width is 620px.
The wide width is 1000px.So unless the OP has changed their Index template, isn’t that the max width for the featured image on the Index page. ?
-
It looks like your homepage is set up using the Latest Posts Block, where the default image size for Features Images is currently set to “Large”:

That block does not have a “Full Size” setting, but you can specify image dimensions underneath that. Could you try setting a height and width for that and see if that has any effect?
@justjennifer There was no editing of the Index template, so that should be correct. -

I’m not sure what is different between the featured images for this post:
https://switchiton.game.blog/2022/05/23/amazing-superhero-squad-nintendo-switch-review/
And the more recent ones that are not showing up at the “full size” on the homepage?
-
helper-heroponriki – something is definitely odd, as the OP mentioned in their original post. I’m looking at the front page and the featured image for the “Dark Deity” post “shrank” as I was looking at it.
The Firefox inspector says both featured images are 500 pixels wide, but clearly that’s not how they are being displayed for me. (temp screenshot)
Again, Firefox 100.0.2 and Win10Pro on a PC

After taking a closer look at your media library, I noticed that your most recent two blog posts use
.webpimage files instead of the more standard.jpgor.pngformat.- https://switchitongame.files.wordpress.com/2022/05/c8af0f0d-9633-4f0d-a391-479c524c8a71.webp

You are sourcing these images from the internet, yes? That is the only place I have seen this image format in active use. We do support
.webpas a format, but I suspect this block is having difficulty with them, whereas it displays.jpgfiles just fine, for example.I am reporting this to our engineers, but we would not be able to offer you a timeline for when this will be addressed since it will need some investigation first. If you have the option to switch to
.jpgor.pngimages, you should no longer see this display issue.Another option would be to try the Blog Posts block or the Query Loop block, both of which allow you to display a feed of blog posts. In fact, I recommend trying either of those because they have some cool options that are different than the block you are using now.
@justjennifer, nice sleuthing. :)I also noticed this in Firefox, where the image tries to come in at the correct size before something (loading in the background?) causes the
.webpimage to resize itself smaller. On Chrome, it just comes in at the smaller size, so there is no visible resizing step, although they both end up at the same incorrect size.I did not see any reports of Firefox bugs regarding
.wepbimage handling, but in any event, I suspect it’s an issue with our block, so addressing it should fix the problem regardless of browser. Keep up the excellent work, friend! o/ -
Oh my goodness, thank you all very much! It was indeed an issue with the images being .webp format – I converted them into .jpg and it’s fixed! I don’t know how they became .webp in the first place but I’m very grateful that this has been resolved! Thank you again!

Wow, I’m glad we got to the source of the issue. o/
I had a somewhat long convo with Support a few weeks back about WebP image format and whether uploaded JPG and PNG were converted to WebP when viewed by browsers that support this format (yes, was their answer), but we didn’t catch that images uploaded as WebP might have issues. I will now add “proceed with caution” on that. Thanks for digging!
