Keeping old theme active while working on changing to a new theme

  I have a website that was built with wordpress and I want to change the theme and completely redo the site. Is there a way to work on a new site and theme while keeping the current website live? I don’t want to be working on the new layout of the site and have it go live before I am ready. Thanks.

  If you are then you can use the preview function in the theme customizer. http://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

  No, it is for a different website. I saw a couple plugins but they were old and had reviews saying they didn’t work with the latest versions of wordpress. I also saw other posts suggesting to download wordpress locally and work on the new site that way. I just didn’t know if there was a newer plugin that worked well for this.

  WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support forums.

  There is no FTP access to WordPress.COM blogs and we bloggers cannot install any plugins or third party themes.

  There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes that.

  WordPress.ORG offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.ORG install.
