keeping post categories internal
-
When I assign a category to a post, the category link below the post takes the user to the wordpress “universe” (http://wordpress.com/tag/journalism/, for example), but the links in the category section in my sidebar take the user to my own category page. I want all category links to stay on my site, not go off to wordpress. Any ideas?

There is no way to change that. It’s the way wordpress.COM has designed things, and it actually ends up giving you quite a bit more search engine juice.
In some themes, the categories and tags can be hidden with the paid CSS upgrade as long as you have some experience with CSS, but there is no official support for the upgrade and few here in the forums with much experience with CSS.
In some themes, hiding the categories and tags also takes other things away such as date, and/or author, and/or comment links.
