Keeping privacy on google
-
I deliberately chose a different name for my blog, which would not identify me. Yet, when I google myself (my real name), my site appears. Is there any way I could keep the two separate?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Not at this point, it appears. In most cases when this happens, it’s because you told someone who then linked to your blog with your real name, eg “and go look at my sister Whoopi’s new blog” or whatever.
To protect your privacy when you set up a blog;
Use a brand-new email that doesn’t have any connection to any of your other emails and doesn’t have your name in it
Pick a username that doesn’t have any of your real name in it
Don’t tell your friends
Don’t post it on Facebook, twitter, etc

Thank you for the response raincoaster. I thought I had done all of what you mentioned, except maybe my gmail account is linked to my regular email.
Lesson learned! -
Well, it seems you use your childrens’ real names. That’s another no-no. And their ages. It’d be a piece of cake to put two and two together. Also realize that when you purchased the domain upgrade, you had to give your real data. That is probably how the connection was made, since the owner of each domain is indexed and available for public viewing.
I’m the ONLY person on WP.com whose domain doesn’t track back to them, because WP.com itself bought my domain for me.

Wow! Thank you raincoaster for the added info. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you manage to get WP to buy your domain for you?
I am due to renew my susbcriptions very soon, so is there anything different I could do to ensure that I maintain complete anonymity?

Not raincoaster, and not answering how she got wp to buy her domain, but this will interest you:

Thank you 1tess for the links. They are very helpful. I think I have some homework to do now before I renew my subscriptions.

Lily: you do not have anonymity, and it’s probably not achievable on that account at this point. What I suggest, if you really truly want anonymity, is getting a new account and starting all over again with a different blog, not making any of the above mistakes. If compromised anonymity is okay, then you can continue, but do NOT renew your upgrades is my advice.
WordPress.com bought my domain because they wanted to announce the domain mapping upgrade and they thought “who’s egotistical enough to really, really want their own domain” and came up with me. Actually, I gave them hell for it after I discovered I’d dropped 500,000 places on Technorati, but I got over it once I realized the benefits of a custom domain. They include being easily findable; since that’s teh opposite of what you want, don’t get a custom domain, particularly not one with your name in it.

Thank you raincoaster for the clarification. This issue has come up before, at least twice in threads where I was involved. It is a shame that wp does not make it more transparent that it can’t offer private registration. I takes 2 seconds to find a person’s real name, addy, etc. when they have domain mapping.
It does involve an extra fee to host with private registration, but most people wouldn’t know how or why to do it.
