keylogger

I received this tip about a predatory key logger on wordpress sites. I hesitate to work on my blog, even though I pay no premiums for the site, until I’m sure that my computer will not be infected.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Tao,

It would be very difficult for you to get a keylogger unless you break routine security protocols – i.e. downloading unknown executable files, clicking suspicious emails and links, torrenting, etc. This is because the majority of keyloggers on average computers arrive in malware.

Keylogging software is essentially just another type of malware. You can avoid keylogging software in the same way you avoid other malware — be careful what you download and run, and use a solid antivirus program that will hopefully prevent keyloggers from running. There are no real special tips for avoiding keyloggers in particular. Just be careful and exercise basic computer security practices: https://www.howtogeek.com/173478/10-important-computer-security-practices-you-should-follow/

If you are still worried about it, there is great anti-logger software available out there, you can look at a few here: https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/how-do-you-prevent-and-defeat-keyloggers/

    Hi again…

I am of course concerned with keeping my own computer uninfected, but of equal concern is that anyone who visits my blog could have their equipment be infected.
So, I will clarify that my question is How do I determine that my blog site has not become infected along with the other 5,000 wordpress sites with this problem. If it has, I would want my blog to be disinfected, something wordpress would be in the best position to tackle.

  • Hi there,

The keylogger issue you’re referring to affects sites running the open source WordPress software found over on WordPress.org. They keyloggers got onto those sites via the site owners uploading JavaScript code to the site that was disguised to look like it came from a trusted source.

On WordPress.com it’s not possible to upload JavaScript code to your site – we delete any JavaScript automatically if someone tries to add it – so it’s simply not possible for that malware to be added to your site. So no WordPress.com sites are affected by this issue.
