Kid friendly blog

Having peeked into my blogs, some of the younger members of the family are keen to get a blog of their own. I looked into the private blogs which would work. But during the user account setup, log in process a whole load of links to ‘non-kid’ blogs and content are very accessible and that is dissuading me to start a ‘kid-friendly’ blog on wordpress.

Has anyone set up a ‘kid-friendly’ blog on wordpress and if so, how is the privacy handled If not wordpress, can anyone suggest any alternatives?

    Appreciate some help on this.

Probably the best suggestion is to get some hosting and install the software on your own own site. You can download it from http://www.wordpress.org.

I believe that the minimum age for bloggers here at wordpress.com is 13, although there are Club Penguin (damn that game!) bloggers who have in the past admitted that they are 9 and 10 years old and not been removed from the site.

cornell is correct. Under US law, Automattic is not supposed to allow under-13s to sign up without parental permission, and since nobody is asked to confirm their age on signup there should not, in theory, be any under-13s here at all. While wordpress.com do try to keep ‘mature’ blogs out of the dashboard and tags pages this is entirely dependent on users themselves reporting any adult content they produce or find, so it’s not exactly reliable. I agree that buying hosting is your best option as it’s pretty much the only way of controlling the environment your kids are blogging in.

    Thank you Wank and Cornell,

As compared to other free blog platforms, I believe WordPress to be the most ‘sensible’ one. Further, having posted my query I did look around for other platforms, and would have to agree with both of you that a hosted blog would be the best option.

I can supervise and control access and the ‘click-happy’ curiosity of the kids from my side, but the visitors to this ‘kid-friendly’ blog would be obviously, kids and most parents I know, are a tad ignorant to the ‘mischief’ kids can get upto and also get into. That is what I need to safeguard against more – that the other kids don’t have access to any ‘adult’ material.

    Thanks again.

Why wouldn’t the private blog option work? I set up a wp.com blog for my fiance’s daughter, and i set all the privacy settings that are possible. I also have her access the blog exclusively via Firefox (she normally uses another browser, with its own security settings, for any surfing), and i set the browser to always take her back to her blog page, regardless of what she tries to click on.
