Kubrick Theme needs a “Return to Home Page” Link

  • Unknown's avatar

The STYLE that my blog is in, Kubrick Theme ( http://brucewagner.wordpress.com ) DESPERATELY needs a “Click here to return to the home page of Bruce’s Journal » ” button at the top and bottom of the SINGLE POST VIEW…

People enter my blog with a link to a single story, and not only do they not see the sidebar, but there are no navigation buttons to get to the Home page…

The only option presented to them is to leave a Reply (Comment)…

    They get so confused…

You and I know that if you click the secret hidden link (the NAME of my blog) in the header, that it takes you to the home page… But, no one else would ever find that link. It is FAR from obvious for the reader.

I’ve even had people leave a comment: “no comment” …as a reply to several posts – just because they did not know how to continue navigating back to the blog itself…

This is definitely an improvement that I think every Kubrick Theme blogger would appreciate.

Just for reference, speaking for everybody is very much frowned upon around here. You nor anyone else speak for everybody nor do you know the thoughts of everybody else.

Send in a feedback but that’s been standard for many years. I agree though and it’s one of the first things (the missing sidebar)I change on my rollout of the theme or ones based on it.

I, obviously, don’t speak for everyone.

    That’s why I said, “…I think…”

In the line, “This is definitely an improvement that I THINK every Kubrick Theme blogger would appreciate.”

Obviously, this is a Forum. I post my thoughts. And everyone is free to respond with their thoughts.

It goes without saying, I speak only for myself.

PS – It’s one of the first things you change? How?

  • Unknown's avatar

PPS – Rather than Feedback, Mark has said that if I post such items here, in this forum, they will most definitely be read.

    By the way…

    In the meantime…

I have been MANUALLY adding this link to the bottom of EVERY new post:

    ~

Click here to return to the home page of Bruce’s Journal »

I don’t change it here. We don’t have file level access. I do hosting and regular wp installs. It’s a simple manner of putting in the get_sidebar() function call and changing the name of the center column from narrow to wide.

  • Unknown's avatar

If there are enough requests for such a change to a theme (on the free hosted site) will they make a such a change?

Do they have enough staff to be able to take on things like that?

  • Unknown's avatar

Probably. Staff has made changes fairly quickly on subjects discussed here. The top100 results broken down by language is an example that came out of the forums.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh, if only every theme had “return to home page” AND “next/previous”. Many a time I’ve been checking some blog post and wondered what else the person was writing at that time…but been unable to see it.

I just put the curser in the url/browser on top of the screen and delete a bit of it until only the main webaddress is left. Then I say go and land a the blog front page…

drmike wrote: “changing the name of the center column from narrow to wide”. Is that an user option? Can I do that on my blog? I would like the main column to be more wide. If so which functions do I click on?

  • Unknown's avatar

No you can’t do it. It’s not a wordpress.com user option – sorry. We wordpress.com users cannot edit our templates and that’s what drmike’s talking about with Bruce – he’s talking about the ways and means from a wordpress.org coding point of view, and not from a wordpress.com user’s point of view.

As we are all on a shared multi-user platform here at wordpress.com and if one user could change the underlying code then everyone of the bloggers with the same theme would find their blog changed too.

However, if one hires a web host that host can download a free template from http://wordpress.org and change it to their heart’s content (regular wp.org installs). Bruce knows this but he does not want to make the wordpress.org choice.

Yes, you’re right. Every sophisticated user probably knows how to do that.

But it’s the unsophisticated users I am concerned about losing… My grandmother, my Mom, or even my older sister… might never guess to do that…

Navigation buttons should always be obvious.

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually you just click on the blog name in the top banner. That would also get you back to the home page.

The banner too I believe. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes, you’re right.

But, unfortunately… it’s not obvious. And the public does not know that trick.

  • Unknown's avatar

I used to assume clicking on banners would do it, but that doesn’t work in all themes either, and after a few false tries you get out of the habit.

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually I think most websites are like that. Click on the big banner and get back to the home page.

Still should send in a feedback though if you haven’t.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Just now sent one…

  • Unknown's avatar

Just about every website on the Internet has a top banner that links back to the home page.

And the public generally does know that trick. Are you sure that everyone other than yourself is unaware of this?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Clicking on headers is common.
Adding a link would double the Home links.

Create a text widget with the word Home as the link to the front of the blog.
Place this at the top of the sidebar.
    Job done :)

Widgets do NOT appear on article pages. They only appear on the Home page. So a widget with a link to the Home page — which only appears on the Home page — would not be very effective.

Anyone know of a list of which themes have a built-in link to HOME from the individual item pages?
