l need to be told !
-
l’ve spent almost an hour reading all sorts of forum posts and not found my answer. l’ve spent the better part of half a day fiddling with my blog settings and achieved zero.
So l have to ask (l’m female, l dont like asking things since we are usually born knowing…..)
l have a blog here and it wont do as its told.
l noticed the older posts have vanished into a black hole.
l wanted to have the most recent post on the first page (that happens). l wanted all the older posts down the side column so one could just click on them to read them. At the end of the month, l wanted those posts to go into the archive and stay there under their monthly banner.
What l seem to have is a archive button that drops down and shows just one post. The most recent one. None of the others (22 of them.) How do l get them post heading to display down the side?
If l click on the dates on the calander, sure – l can see the post headings for each day…but l want to see the whole post, not just another clickable heading. Is this do-able?
Please give me a nice simple answer or a step by step or even tell me its not do-able. But if you give me big words or really complex computer speak, my eyes are going to glaze over and l’ll stare into space.
l’m not overly game to just click things at random as l have been known to remove blogs while experimenting.Cheers.

The Recent Posts widget will display only a few posts. That can’t be changed.
The Archive widget shows your archives for September; you have no previous content. If you click on September, you get the last few posts of September, however many you’ve set your blog to display at one time. This number, the number of posts you display at one time, is the same whether someone is looking at your normal blog or looking at your archive. So if you’ve set your blog to display ten posts per page, your archives will display ten posts per page. Because they’re Archives, though, they only show a tiny bit of the whole post. People need to click on the title to read the whole post. You can change the number displayed under Settings -> General.
You can, if you want, make a text widget and list every single post you’ve ever made in it, but you have to update it by hand every time you make a post. Instructions for making a text widget are here:
http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/12/24/using-the-text-widget/And note they have to be written all in HTML.

I have also spent the good chunk of my day completely screwing up my blog, staring into space and yelling about how I need to go to school and learn all this code stuff. So I don’t know if you should take my advice. BUT.
My very first post on my blog remains on the front page because when I published it I checked the box for whatever the hell it says to make that post stay on the front page. In the settings it lists however many blogs you want to be listed on your front page. SO. I would *assume* if you want only your most recent post on your front page, when you publish it select that little option box to stick it on the front page. Then change your settings to only display one blog on the front screen, the rest of them to be archived. Now as for the archive situation I wouldn’t have the slightest clue. I probably don’t know what I am talking about altogether but feel your frustration as I am pissed off at the world right now for *me* screwing my blog up. So I thought I would give it a shot.
Good luck.

Oh boy. Um….
Okies, l’ve looked at a few other blogs and read a whole heap more bits of the forum past hoping for info.
l just found out what links were and added some of them. No, not the answer to my issue but it was summin new and l just had to have it.
(lf l go back to school, will l get a discount through my seniors card?)
Okay….number of posts to display, l set it at 1 because l’m ever aware of those folk on dial up ( some of my buddies live remote and run the internet by pedal power).
l’ll go read that link put above but this bit scares me : “And note they have to be written all in HTML.”
* gulp *Shesthinking – Big hugs. Its a bit depressing when you hit refresh expecting to see a fancy new blog but instead you find out you’ve deleted the darn thing. Seems a bit silly for a grown adult to be sitting at a computer sobbing their heart out but…..well…..it just happens!
-
@ shesthinking if you only want your most recent post to display, don’t set ANYTHING as sticky. Just set your blog to display one post per page.
If you want specific help with your blog, you need to give us a link, starting with http, so we can look at it. Or just link your name to your blog following the instructions here:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-make-your-name-link-to-your-blog?replies=54
@ morganofercall I’m going to give you an awesome tip for writing text widgets. Go to write them as if they were a post, but never publish them. You can hit Save, just don’t hit Publish. You can use the visual editor to get everything just the way you want, centering, italicizing, whatever. Then, when it’s just the way you want, click the HTML (code) editor tab, and copy all of the code, every scrap of it. Then you simply paste that in the text widget!

*blink*
Going to run off and feed the horses then come back and study what you have just written. l think l will be able to follow that if l concentrate (which l cant do with so many equines screaming at me).
Thankyou for taking the time to reply. -

Only if you skin them first!
(Horses are retired show pony (Aust Riding Pony) and its blind buddy (Welsh A). My old timer (Waler cross, aged 38) passed away two weeks ago, breaking my heart.)
Now, back to the blog.
l think l’ve done good. Or very very bad. Have a look. l got a side bar up and put this month on it, then linked all the posts to it so they all show.
This is good, its what l wanted….But (and there is alway a but)
This means l’m going to have to link every single post l make – yes? Manually like?
When l start on next month, can l collapse September’s links all into one? Or am l not making sense? Is it time l walked away from the computer and stopped thinking about it?Not sure if l fixed things or just broke them further.
-
Under Design – Widgets you should see a widget called Recent Posts. Drag and drop that into your sidebar. It won’t give you a whole month of posts but it’s a whole lot easier than linking each post manually. In addition, if you add the Archive widget, that will allow people to see a whole month’s worth of posts (in summary) at a time.
But by far the easiest way for people to have access to your older posts as your blog grows, is for you to use the categories and/or tags. That will let visitors see all the posts you’ve written on a particular topic they are interested in.
If you really want to continue as you are links to every post available by month, I’d say the best thing might be to use pages. At the end of the month, take all the html code from your sidebar widget and copy it into a page called ‘September 2008’. Then stick a Pages widget into your sidebar.
-
Okies. l’ve really got to stop fiddling before l do break something.
That last paragraph sounds about like what l should do. l’ve just got to read what you wrote about 90 times so it sinks in.
Thankyou. -
It does depend on what (or more accurately, who) your blog is for, though. If it’s essentially a personal journal and you just want an easy way of seeing your posts month by month, then fine – use the text widget and the pages workaround.
But if you want to make it easy for visitors to find things they’re interested in, then I think you’re making a lot of unnecessary work for yourself. The standard widgets (Recent Posts, Archive, Categories) will work well in helping readers find older posts from specific times or on specific topics. That may not be what you’re aiming for, which is fine, but if it is then I really wouldn’t bother with all the complicated coding you’re doing at the moment.
-
Also, it’s interesting to me to see that you’ve put the posts in your sidebar in alphabetical rather than chronological order. I wonder why?
-
Those posts in the side bar – l wanted them chronological. l have no idea what button l pushed to put them as they are – l’d like to unpush it if l could.
My blog is…erm….l used to write in print and online in several places. l retired so dont anymore. My other blog (now deleted) was a way for friends and such to keep track of me on a regular basis. They come, they read and some leave comments, most dont. Thats okay, at least they know l’m still alive.
l have made a rod for my own back, havent l? l should of left it alone, l dont understand any of it now.
Will have another look in the morning and see if l can work it out.
Thankyou again. -

marianhouse – there is no way for anyone to check out your website because you haven’t bothered to link it in your user name. Besides, what does that have to do with the questions in this thread?
-
Right. There went another hour achiving nothing.
Do l have this right – my blog entries should all be pages, not posts.
If they were all pages, they could go into one post called September.Could l trouble someone to explain:
At the end of the month, take all the html code from your sidebar widget and copy it into a page called ‘September 2008’.
Where do l find the html code in the sidebar tool?
l think this one might defeat me somehow.

This might help:
I wouldn’t go tweaking anything till I’d read up a bit more. You’re making big structural changes that you might have to undo later. Take it easy.
