label pingbacks as such
-
A comment that is created automatically by a pingback appears not to have much to distinguish it from a spam comment – especially if it is written in a language that is not understandable to the author of the post – for example one I got at http://ejdissectingroom.wordpress.com/2010/02/17/sherlock-holmes-the-fifth-servant-and-the-ghetto-of-prague/#comments said only “[…] la recensione pubblicata sul Jewish Journal a firma di Charlotte Gordon oppure l’interessante intervista rilasciata da Kenneth Wishnia ai blog […]” before I added interpretative remarks to it. WordPress can identify a pingback comment as such but apparently only after that comment has been approved then filtered for “pings” in the My Dashboard -> Comments window.
A lot of confusion would be avoided (and Forum traffic reduced) if the comment text of the pingback comment were to include something like “[pingback…] in place of the initial “[…]” – for example see the non-conclusive exchange on the Questions forum about “Link to WordPress blog automatically makes comment.” Just attaching the word “pingback” to that comment would have immensely contributed to a successful search through the forums and support text.
