Ladder — widgets, footer

  • Unknown's avatar

    Two issues (so far) with my recent switch over to Ladder:

    1. my widgets from last premium theme don’t seem to be showing — recent posts, follow, archives, search . . .

    2. how does one hide the footer menu since though it’s the same as main menu, it’s not rendering properly.

    All help much appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Check in the inactive widgets area of the site’s widgets page. You may drag the missing widgets one-by-one to the widget areas that you want them to reside in, and drop them. This is a common result of changing from one theme to another.

    2. how does one hide the footer menu since though it’s the same as main menu, it’s not rendering properly.

    If it’s a custom menu, then you can simply unselect it at Manage Menus or (at the bottom of the Menu Structure) at Menu Settings > Theme Locations.

    How is it not rendering properly?

    Thanks doc for the prompt response.

    I deleted all widgets and then redragged and dropped them but still not showing. The odd thing is that twitter icon does show whatever I do.

    Regarding the footer menu I deselected it but random pages still show. Any further thoughts?

    Cheers

    When you switch from one theme to another, the widgets may — I’m not sure whether it happens all the time — end up in the inactive widgets section on the new theme. These widgets will include all of the information, content, settings, etc. which they had on the previous theme. Therefore, deleting widgets is not only unnecessary, but leaves you unable to restore any customizations. You must then begin from scratch with dragging default widgets from the “available” widgets area. Is that what you’ve done?

    The odd thing is that twitter icon does show whatever I do.

    Is that link in a custom social links menu?

    Regarding the footer menu I deselected it but random pages still show.

    I’ll tag the topic for staff attention. Without access to the website, or the full theme, it’s difficult for a volunteer to analyze this and other issues you’re having.

    Thanks Doc —

    Regarding widgets, yeah I did start from scratch.

    Since I’ve had many premium themes over the years this is my favorite. If I could solve these two issues, that would be great — until then I’m becalmed :)

    Cheers!

    To have widgets displayed on your front page, you need to follow Ladder’s setup guide:

    Widget-Only Front Page Template

    As you can see in the theme demo, we have a simple text widget on the front page. To set this up:

    1. Create a new page and assign it the “Widget-Only Front Page” template under Page Attributes.
    2. Set your new page as a Static Front Page under Settings → Reading.
    3. Go to Appearance → Widgets and add a text widget with some content to the “Front Page Widget” location.

    This is the only way to display widgets in Ladder.

    Like all premium themes, Ladder has its own forum, where the theme developer can help you directly. If you need help with anything theme-specific in the future, this would be the best place to post:

    https://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/ladder

    I also wanted to mention that I noticed your domain is expiring in 3 days. If you plan to keep it, I’d suggest you renew as soon as possible to avoid extra fees.

    I’ll look into the footer menu area separately.

  • Regarding the footer menu I deselected it but random pages still show.

    I did some research into this issue, and the way Ladder works is that if you don’t assign a custom menu to the footer location, it displays your default page menu instead. Because the space is fairly small, what it’s doing right now is displaying the first five pages you have, in alphabetical order.

    If you’d like to hide that menu, this CSS should take care of it:

    #footermenu {
      display: none;
    }

    Just let me know if you need further help!

    Thanks so much Kathryn.

    I find Ladder very temperamental — odd things happening — which I’ll deal with once I get the basics right. Speaking of basics, this is what the css currently looks like. What further do I need to do to make this take effect?

    /*
    Welcome to Custom CSS!
    #footermenu {
    display: none;
    }
    To learn how this works, see http://wp.me/PEmnE-Bt
    */

  • Right now you’ve put the CSS in between comment tags, the /* and */ so that’s why nothing is taking effect, it’s “commented out” at the moment. You should just have this in the CSS editor, nothing else:

    #footermenu {
      display: none;
    }
