Landing page with a different URL

My goal is to collect names and email addresses. I’m using Constant Contact. I’ve had my current WordPress account/blog for several years with URL developingwisdom.wordpress.com. I have another domain now. How can I add another site here using the http://www.itsnever2late2bloom.com domain, and use it as a landing page? How will I get the answer to this question?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Do I understand correctly that you want to use your custom domain site solely as a landing page for email sign ups for your Constant Contact newsletter?

To use your itsnever2late2bloom.com custom domain (registered with GoDaddy) on either your current WordPressdotcom site or a new WordPressdotcom website , you would need to buy the domain mapping upgrade which has to be renewed annually. More about that here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/create-a-blog/#adding-a-new-site-or-blog-to-an-existing-account
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Note that using a Custom Domain on a WordPressdotcom site means your site is hosted here and subject to the WordPressdotcom Terms of Service which I suggest you review as well.

As I am uncertain whether collecting names and email addresses as the sole purpose of a WordPressdotcom site falls under a permitted use here, I’ve tagged this for Staff input. Please be patient while waiting for their reply.

As far as the nuts and bolts I’m not really familiar with Constant Contact, but if you are using them for your email marketing, then you have two options:

They will need to host a sign up page for you on their site so you can link to it from your WordPressdotcom website. You will not be able to use their sign up form widgets or plugins here. You would only be able to link to a sign up page on their site.

The other option is to use a plain WPcom contact form for newsletter sign ups. This will not be automatic since you will need to manually input the information received in the contact form on your site to your Constant Contact newsletter signups.

  • Hi @beecoming, as @justjennifer pointed out, we actually don’t support Constant Contact forms here at this time.

Your other option is to go ahead and install your own copy of WordPress.org at another host, rather than using our service. Your host may be able to help with that, or you can find help here: https://wordpress.org/support

@supernovia- just to clarify then, the purpose of the site itself is not problematic vis-a-vis the ToS?

    Thanks. Please define ToS.

  • ToS is terms of service, which you can read here: http://en.wordpress.com/tos/

And as to whether it’s a violation or ToS or not: I can think of some cases where a little info and a form would be perfectly acceptable (a wedding site with an RSVP form, for example), and others where it wouldn’t be. One example of a site that is not acceptable by our ToS is a page that exists solely to send folks elsewhere.

If the site was indeed problematic, the ToS team would need to take a look. The site doesn’t exist yet though so we don’t have enough information to judge. Thanks for asking, though!

    Thanks for your answer @supernovia

    My 2¢-
If it were me, it would be a poor investment of time and money to go through the entire process of adding a new site, buying and setting up the domain mapping upgrade, setting my site up as a landing page with a contact form and start collecting email addresses for my mailing list on Constant Contact (and it’s uncertain whether this mailing list is for the site that IS hosted by WordPressdotcom) and then submit my landing page site to the ToS team and be told that this is not a use permitted by WordPressdotcom’s Terms of Service.
    /My 2¢

Yes, it’s possible to avoid this entire scenario by setting up a self-hosted WP install. But since @beecoming is asking about setting up the custom domain landing page on WordPressdotcom, perhaps someone from the ToS team could weigh in here on this pre-purchase upgrade (domain mapping) question before the @beecoming takes the plunge.

Thanks again for your time and interest.

  • That makes sense, @justjennifer :) I recommend they read the ToS and if it doesn’t fit, don’t start building a site here. A ToS member reviewed this thread and suggested we reach out to the user via email for clarification, so we’ll do that.
