Large increase in spam
-
Hi,
In the last month or so, I noticed a huge increase in spam, particularly in the Comments section (and a few more in the Feedback section). Though you now have an Empty Spam option (which is great), it seems as though Akismet is not working. I wrote about this a bit ago and did not receive a reply, so thought I would check in again.
I’m guessing lots of folks are having a similar experience. Are you taking specific steps to change it, or will we continually need to empty the spam box?
Thanks so much.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If the comment spam is in the Spam Folder, then Akismet is doing its job. You can either use the Empty Spam button or just wait and it will be deleted automatically after 30 days, I believe.
The feedback spam folder works a little differently. Akismet still marks relevant feedback spam, but unlike the comment spam folder, which can be emptied en masse, in order to delete feedback spam you need to either check them all under Bulk Actions and Delete them, or delete them individually.

Hi there,
The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam. Spam comes in waves. There are human beings who get paid to post spam. There are robotic programs that post spam. There is no such thing as eliminating all spam but Akismet works very well. For more information please take the time to read “5 things every blogger should know about spam” on this page Akismet: How it works http://akismet.com/how/
Aksimet is a learning engine. If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam. On the spam that Akismet catches on it takes only seconds to click “empty spam” and you don’t even have to click “empty spam” if you don’t want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 30 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.
You can use the Bulk Edit function (check boxes on each comment) to delete less than all the spam comments or to Un-spam more than one comment at a time. Check the box at the comment then choose the proper bulk edit command.
Mark spam as spam as Akismet is a learning engine it will learn over time to sequester these comments that you mark as spam. Set up comment moderation, if you have not already done so, because allowing anonymous commenting on your blog is like putting out the welcome mat for spammers.

It may be short-lived, I’m afraid. I’m running into 404s and Whoops! errors in the forums. May be time to curl up with a good book.

Thank you.
You all have kindly explained how the system functions before. I guess I was curious if something had changed because the increase has been so dramatic. I guess not. :)

One thought, since your site is mostly pages and you do have a contact form on your site, you could turn off commenting/discussion altogether. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

What a fabulous suggestion. Thank you so much. I did it on the home page and left the others alone to see what would happen. And, the spam box; it’s been empty since then.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my site. Wonderful and amazing too that your assistance came from half-way around the world.
Best wishes . . .
