Large space under pictures
-
After tweaking by staff and all those problems after that Macmanx asked me to open a new thread for the following problem.
Everything looks good, but there is only one page with pictures that are not good. The maximum width of the images in the theme Digg 3 is 471 pixels. If I set the pictures to 471 pixels they are much too small, also in a new page. When I enlarged the pictures to 682 pixels then the pictures do have fill width in the column but then there is a large space under the pictures. I never had this problem before.
Because this is a private website I publish here the HTML of this page.
<img class = “align center wp-image-2421” title = “Monthly 11/31/2011” src = “http://vvezalmhaven1.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/permaand311120112.jpg” alt = “” width = “682” height = “353” />
<img class = “align center wp-image-2422” title = “Weekly 11/31/2011” src = “http://vvezalmhaven1.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/perweek311120112.jpg” alt = “” width = “682” height = “353” />
On this page you can see how much you use the site.
The charts are current as of November 2011.I hope someone can help.
Sincerely,
Ruud van Mens

a) I don’t know where you found the 471. The image tool popup says that the maximum is 468, but it doesn’t take into account that images in Digg 3 have 4px padding and 1px border around each side, so the right maximum in Digg 3 is 458px (unless you use CSS to eliminate the padding and the border).
b) So, since the maximum is 458 (or 468), what’s the point of setting the width to 682? If you do that, the rightmost part of the image will be hidden by the sidebar in decent browsers, or there’ll be other complications in lousy browsers (that is, Explorer).
So what you need to do, if the images aren’t good at the available width, is insert them as thumbnails or medium size images and make them link to the real-size original when clicked. See here:
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/images-the-three-link-options/Note: the default width for the thumbnail, medium and large options is set in Settings>Media.

I have given up trying to get my pictures to stay in the same place I left them and at the same size. WordPress is a nightmare to work with.

@pacha34
I can provide this information though I don’t know if it’s applicable to your blog or not. We Volunteers find that members are not optimizing and pre-sizing their images so they fit into the maximum displayed image width and/or into the featured image dimensions required by their themes. Staff recently made changes to featured images that some have had problems with. Uploading large image files is simply a waste if your space allotment for media, and whenever the cropper is brought into play image quality is lost. We also notice that members frequently fail to consult this entry: image alignmentIf you need specific help please don’t hesitate to state very clearly what you need help with so we Volunteers can assist you.

@panaghiotisadam Here I found the information for the correct width of pictures in my theme Digg 3: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/digg3/. In the meantime timethief shows another link with info for all themes: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/23/maximum-image-width/. Thanks timethief!
So I did what you suggested but the pictures are much too small and there is a lot of white space under the pictures.
Here is the HTML of the page:
<p style=”text-align:center;”>
<img class=”aligncenter wp-image-2421″ title=”Per Maand 31-11-2011″ src=”http://vvezalmhaven1.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/permaand311120112.jpg” alt=”” width=”458″ height=”291″ />
<img class=”aligncenter wp-image-2422″ title=”Per Week 31-11-2011″ src=”http://vvezalmhaven1.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/perweek311120112.jpg” alt=”” width=”458″ height=”291″ />
Op deze pagina kunt u zien hoeveel u gebruik maakt van de website.
De grafieken zijn bijgewerkt tot en met november 2011.</p>All the other pages are OK. I also made a new page with the same results. I never had this problem before and I cannot find what’s wrong.
Any suggestions are more than welcome.

a) The second link you pasted is my own post. The first is from the official Theme Showcase site, and it’s wrong: as I already mentioned, the width of the main column in Digg 3 is 468px, but 10px are eaten up by the padding and the border of the images.
b) I didn’t suggest you insert the images at 458px: I suggested you insert them a lot smaller than that, and make them link to the real size original when clicked.
c) I don’t know what “much too small” means to you. And if I copy the code you pasted above and paste it in my tests blog I don’t get “a lot of white space under the pictures”. Is that the complete HTML of the page or only part of it?
In short, I cannot really offer any other advice if I cannot see the page and examine its code myself. If you wish, you can temporarily switch to the middle option in Settings>Privacy. Otherwise you’ll have to contact staff.

Thanks panaghiotisadam.
a) Yes, I followed your advice, see the HTML of the page.
b) I want to have the pictures column wide as they always were.
c) Much too small means that they are not column wide and there is a lot of white space under the pictures.
If you want to see the site use the code moeder51 for entrance.
Thanks again and I hope you can find the problem.
Regards,
Ruud

The password by itself won’t do: you need to add me as a user:

The problem is the images themselves, not the page. Each image is exactly what you’re seeing inside the very light grey borders. The original files are 853×441, they contain a 581×313 frame with the graph and the background, and the rest is white space. If you can’t fix them yourself in an image editing application, I can do it for you.

I never had a problem with this page. Don’t know what is changed. You are very helpful, thanks for that. As you might have seen I have to update this page every month. To remove the white space can I do that with MS Paint or do I have to buy a new package.
For the moment, Can you change the pictures for me?Thanks a lot!

a) I’m a Mac user, so I don’t know how MS Paint works.
b) If you do this every month, then this time you didn’t do it the same: I guess instead of each image alone you somehow saved a whole page with the image in it.
c) Where do you want me to post the links to the edited images – here, your blog, my blog? -
Well, do it here and again thank you very much. I will check whether or not I changed the way I did it.

Again Adam,
Thanks a lot. There must be something wrong in the way that I copy the graphs from MS Excel. Now that I know for sure I think I can correct it.

You’re welcome.
What I would with Excel is save the file as a webpage, open that version, copy the image and upload it.
