Large white space down right side
-
Changing theme over to Twenty Fourteen… I like it so far but I have a wide column of white down the right side. Can you tell me why or how to fix it so that goes away?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Can you be more specific about the issue that you are facing. When i check the website wordsmithingandlight.wordpress.com; it looks completely fine to me and can’t see any white space as you mentioned.
Mention the issue you are facing in detail so it would be of great help to understand it in a better way.

When I see the page I see a bar that runs along the height of the page on the right side of the window. It almost looks like a sidebar on the right side, to include the footer area being cut off… It may just be my screen and I have others checking it… but it has the look of the page being screwed up on my screen. The content area is aligned at the same point on the left side of this white bar. If I am the only one seeing it, it makes me wonder how the rest of the page looks.

You’re not the only one seeing it. That’s the way the Twenty Fourteen theme behaves on a large screen when there are no widgets in the right sidebar widget area (called the “Content Sidebar”). The featured image extends from the right edge of the left sidebar widget area to the right edge of the screen, but the content of a page, a post, or the blog page is centered within that same span with large margins on either side. These margins will be much narrower on smaller screens.
If it’s possible to change that behavior, I believe it would require CSS customization. I’ll tag the topic for staff attention. Staff will respond here.

The theme itself actually has a set width, even with the content sidebar on the right filled in: https://cld.wthms.co/JTXEYR
In this case, it’s just an intention part of the design and there isn’t really a clean way to change that with just CSS alone.
If it’s a concern, I recommend switching to a different theme, as we have a few hundred to choose from: https://wordpress.com/theme

staff-blorbo,
It’s true the content area has a fixed width. I was only pointing out that (on a large screen) the content area shifts to the right with the content sidebar empty of widgets. This shift increases the size of the left margin and decreases the size of the right margin compared to what it would be if the content area didn’t shift to the right.

Hm, you’re right, everything is sort of always centered, so it moves over without that content sidebar.
I believe this will work in Additional CSS:
.site-content .entry-header, .site-content .entry-content, .site-content .entry-summary, .site-content .entry-meta, .page-content { max-width: none; } -
It probably would have worked if I wanted to upgrade from the free account. I do not want to so I will simply choose a new theme. Thank you all for the response and the help.
