Latest Posts Block Bullets

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

    I have a question about the Latest Posts block.

    If you look on my new website at https://mmohz.com you will see I have my Latest Posts, then Categories, and then Archives.

    You will also notice that the Latest Posts section does not include bullet points like the Categories, and Archives blocks do.

    In prior templates I’ve used, the Latest Posts, or Recent Posts widgets had bullet points.

    Am I missing something? I know that Gutenburg is still under a lot of development even though it’s been out for awhile, and maybe the bullet points were simply overlooked in development. I am using a block template made for Gutenburg (Blank Canvas), so I don’t think the template has any effect on why that block isn’t showing bullet points.

    Is there a way to turn the bullet points on that I’m not finding in settings for Latest Posts? If not, can a staff member send feedback to the proper people to have this fixed?

    I know it’s a small thing, but it makes it a little difficult to separate the posts visually in the list without bullet points.

    Thanks for your help as always.

    Hi,

    In several tests, I was unable to display a list with bullets using the Latest Posts Block. The support page seems to indicate that the list is supposed to be bulleted by default. I also found no setting to enable or disable bullets. I’ve no explanation, and it could be a bug, so I’ll call for staff attention. Staff will respond here.

    If you have the premium plan, or higher, on the site, they you’ll have access to Live Chat Support, which you might find more convenient and expeditious than using the community forums.

    Thank you. Yes one of my websites is currently on the Premium plan, however I don’t mind waiting in the forums as it allows me to access these topics from my member profile if I run into any similar issue in the future. I’m grateful for your help.

  • Hi there,

    In prior templates I’ve used, the Latest Posts, or Recent Posts widgets had bullet points.

    There appears to be an issue is with the Blank Canvas theme that is the root cause here. The block should be a bulleted list by default (the block does not have options for list styles) but it seems to be the case that this theme is truly a “blank canvas” in that it lacks the default CSS to display bullets.

    We will report this to our team for a closer look, but for now since you are upgraded to the Premium plan on that site, you can add the following CSS so that you do not have to wait for an official fix.

    .wp-block-latest-posts.wp-block-latest-posts__list {
        list-style: disc;
        padding-left: 40px;
    }

    Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Ok that makes sense. Thanks for checking into that.

    It is actually one of my other websites that is on the Premium plan. My mmohz.com website is currently on the the Personal plan for awhile until I build that website up some more. I tried the CSS code you provided but it didn’t work. I will save that code to try again in the future when the time comes to upgrade my plan.

    I’m grateful for all your help.

    @staff-totoro,

    Hi. I suspected that the issue might be theme limited, so today I tested on some other themes, and had the same results in each case. None of the themes I’ve tried have produced a bulleted list with the Latest Posts Block. In my tests, the expected bullets in a Latest Posts Block list were also missing on the following themes:

    Baskerville 2
    Hever
    Kingsley
    Illustratr — bullets show in editor, not on view
    Masu

    I’m using the latest Firefox on Windows 7, desktop.

    Just wanted to say you are awesome for checking all of these templates. I didn’t even think to check this on my test blog.

    So I have this old test blog you can look at – https://jaxtestblog.wordpress.com/

    I am using the Colinear template on that blog. It’s the template I’ve been using for years on pretty much all of my sites before Gutenburg, and before I switched over to the Blank Canvas template on my other websites recently.

    That test blog still has the old “Recent Posts” widget on it, which is showing the bullet points. I never removed it on that test blog after WordPress switched to Gutenberg blocks. You can see it on the right sidebar.

    I just went to that blog and added the “Latest Posts” block under the old Recent Posts widget, and the Latest Posts block is not showing bullet points in the Colinear template as well.

    I too am using the latest Firefox, but on a Windows 10 desktop, and also Android. Will keep checking back for any more development on this issue.

  • We’ve got a great community here :) Thanks for your thoroughness on that, @musicdoc1, and for your extra testing, @dtpiixart.

    Sounds the block is taking cues from each theme, then, when it should have a configurable mind of its own.

    Given that “fixing” this to add bullets to all List Posts blocks could surprise some users with unwanted bullets, I’m filing a feature request to make bullets an option going forward.

    Also: the CSS my colleague provided works on my test site. Can you clarify which site it’s not working on so we can take a look and add workaround notes to the feature request?

    Glad I could help.

    Good call. I can see how that would surprise some people. Kind of like a backward effect from when I couldn’t figure out why no bullets lol.

    It is on my MMHOZ.com website where the CSS didn’t work. The site currently is on the Personal plan. I simply copied the code into the CSS spot under Advanced options for that block. Also to add, the Latest Post block I’m using on that site is a part of a Reusable block I’ve titled “Sidebar”. Everything that you see on the right “sidebar” on that site is a part of the Reusable block I used to create that sidebar on the right side of two columns. This shouldn’t matter though I wouldn’t think, considering we’ve shown the Latest Posts block just simply isn’t showing bullets anywhere on all the other templates tested.

    I think it was mentioned or implied that the CSS code would only work if your site is on the Premium plan or higher. I am not at a point yet where I’m ready to upgrade my plan on this site, so it will be on the Personal plan for awhile, but as I hopefully begin adding more content, particularly my photography, I’m sure I will need to upgrade my plan within six months maybe. I will just have to deal with the no bullets issue until a fix can be made, or until I can upgrade, and then see if the CSS code will work.

    Also to add, this has been a great and helpful thread, and again I’m grateful for all the help and input, and hope this can help to improve WordPress in the long-run.

    @supernovia,

    Sounds the block is taking cues from each theme, then,

    Hi. I like your idea of adding an optional setting for that feature, but for clarification, we’ve yet to identify a single theme that produces a bulleted list with the Latest Posts Block. @dtpiixart says doesn’t work on Colinear, and it worked for neither of us on Blank Canvas. Since my previous tests, failures listed above, I’ve also tested an additional six themes where the list produced by that block has no bullets. So my list of “no bullet” themes is now: Affinity, Afterlight, Altofocus, Baskerville 2, Hever, Illustratr, Karuna, Kingsley, Koi, Masu, Twenty Twelve, AND I’ve yet to find one theme that produces a bulleted list with the Latest Post Block.

    I forgot a couple:

    Affinity, Afterlight, Altofocus, Baskerville 2, Blank Canvas, Colinear, Hever, Illustratr, Karuna, Kingsley, Koi, Masu, Twenty Twelve,
