Latex display equations (?)
-
Has anyone had any luck with ‘displayed equations’ (vs. inline formulas)? I have experimented a bit, and I have used the search function on wordpress.com. That was handy, as it allowed me to search on the actual latex code. I didn’t really find any examples of what I was looking for.
Specifically, I’m looking to autonumber equations, and apply labels. So I would be using the begin{equation} command.
Thanks!

As far as I recall, the $latex …$ syntax already puts us in math mode, so we can’t use things like begin{equation}. From a technical perspective, I suspect that autonumbering wouldn’t work anyways – I’m pretty sure that LaTeX gets invoked once each time that the parser encounters the $latex …$ syntax within a single line.

You could be right. I’m still new at this.
So what you are saying is that it would be invalid to nest begin{equation} … end{equation} within $latex … $–is that right? Thanks!

Correct.
begin{equation}switches from text mode to math mode in LaTeX; since we’re not in text mode, it isn’t valid at that point.I don’t know of a reasonable way to do automatic numbering. You might be able to number your equations manually, and get them to look reasonable within the post, by playing around with HTML tables. You can’t really deal with the numbers effectively in LaTeX, because the rendering process doesn’t know anything about the space in which the browser will be rendering the web page.
