Latex macros; Latex commands ‘equation,’ ‘align,’ ‘tag’

  Macros seem not supported; example
  newcommand{sech}{mathop{rm sech}nolimits} sech^2 A
  is rendered as error. I tried def as well which also just led to an error.
  Fairly fundamental commands like equation, align, tag also don’t seem supported (I realize aligned is).
  As WordPress says it supports Latex, I am confused.

  This is for the free version, not the professional one which comes with plug-ins (probably also Latex ones). So the question is about Latex innately in WordPress’ free edition.
