LaTeX misalignment and size issues

  (1) When entering a LaTeX code like ‘($latex Y^{*}$ to $latex Y_{w}$)’, the Y fonts are misaligned (i.e., one ‘Y’ is set lower on the line than the other). How can this be if the inline code is the same? (I separate the codes because I hate how the ‘text{to}’ insert looks.)

  (2) It is unclear how to adjust LaTeX’s font size from the tutorial. I tried, for example, ‘$latex Y^{*}LaTeX&s=-3$’ (and many variations of this), but I keep getting a parsing error.
