Layout Grid Block Issues in Zoologist

  • Spitting a complex thread to focus on issues with the layout block in Zoologist

    Site in question: ablogdemo.wordpress.com

I’m going to link the referenced posts and pages for reference. Since they’re test posts on a test site, though, I’m sure they won’t be permanent. We can remove the links when we wrap up this thread.

On the Posts page, the “half-and-half” post shows the Post title, featured image AND just below the featured image, truncated text from outside of the Layout grid and then the Post metadata. If you click through to the single post view, the post displays as expected.

Again on the Posts page, the other two posts display their Post title, featured image and Post metadata (no post content visible at all). The single post view displays as expected with no overlapping text on the featured image, including the “no spacer” post.

As a side note, @justjennifer, I would love an export of your test content if you’re willing to let me use it on my theme testing site! You’ve got some scenarios I wouldn’t have anticipated in testing, and they’d be quite useful. Let us know :)

  • So I just realized what truncated text means. An excerpt. I went ahead and tested by adding my own excerpt text. That is indeed what appears on the front page.

Next I tested another theme. The posts page on Twenty Nineteen has excerpts, and shows the correct first few lines from the grid layout.

Then I added a Blog Posts Block to a page. It only shows the content from outside the grid, like you saw on Zoologist. Same with the Latest Posts block.

So, the excerpts from Zoologist, the Blog Post Block, and Latest Post Block are both missing content from the Layout Grid block. Whereas the default WordPress excerpt gets the first lines of content whether they’re in a grid or not. I’m not positive where to file this bug yet, but we’ll get it done. Thank you!

Hello again, I’ve made my test site private again as I know that Staff can see it regardless. 😊

Still reading but wanted to clarify this point:

So I just realized what truncated text means. An excerpt. I went ahead and tested by adding my own excerpt text.

I did not create a manual excerpt for any of the test posts. (That’s why I purposely didn’t use the word “excerpt”.)

Also, has the front end “Edit” link to open the Editor been removed on Zoologist? I don’t see it.

    More later.

Just to make sure we’re keeping Zoologist issues here and further to what I wrote above:

I did not try to copy and publish those same posts again after I switched to Zoologist to check the RSS feed. However, I did find it strange that there seemed to be a correlation between that Description field in the RSS feed and what appeared on the Zoologist Posts page.

I also published a number of other draft posts on ablogdemo for comparison and meanwhile It looks like this issue affects all the Blockbase child themes, not just Zoologist.

And are we sure this is an issue only with Zoologist/Blockbase? I just switched to Seedlet (being the parent of a bunch of child themes) and I’m getting the same Posts page display as Zoologist.

I’ve left Seedlet active on my test site for you.

☕☕☕ <–too much or not enough!

  • Hello!

I did not create a manual excerpt for any of the test posts. (That’s why I purposely didn’t use the word “excerpt”.)

Got it – I see this too.

And are we sure this is an issue only with Zoologist/Blockbase? I just switched to Seedlet (being the parent of a bunch of child themes) and I’m getting the same Posts page display as Zoologist.

I’ve left Seedlet active on my test site for you.

Seedlet is very similar to Zoologist in the face it’s a block first/block based theme.

We’ll still taking a look at how best to approach this internally, but we’ll be sure to update this thread soon once we know more.

  • OK.

So the problem I see is that the_excerpt() function is sometimes ignoring the layout block. Several parent & child themes display excerpts without layout content.

And, apparently the Posts related blocks are always affected, regardless of theme.

Maybe the themes and post blocks are using similar custom excerpt functions?

  • Also, Jen is offline for the day but sent me this.

Today I published 3 additional posts on ablogdemo, 2 posts included a Pattern from the Block Inserter which uses the Layout Grid block and one post with a Pattern from the Block Inserter without a Layout Grid block. It’s pretty clear now that in some themes, there’s correlation between what appears in the Description field in the RSS feed and what appears on the Posts page itself.

I previewed block-editor styles themes exclusively while the theme was set to display “your recent posts” in the Customizer, but did not fully check child themes, believing that their behavior would come from the parent theme.

    Affected themes (in Preview):
Twenty Twenty (in Theme Options when Archive pages are set to display excerpts)
    Blockbase and child themes
    Seedlet and child themes
    Blank Canvas
Independent Publisher 2 (when the Posts page is set to display excerpts)
    Dyad 2

Other themes tested (in Preview), which were not affected:
    Twenty Twenty-One
    Twenty Nineteen
    Twenty Sixteen
    Twenty Seventeen
    Twenty Sixteen
    Twenty Fifteen
    Twenty Fourteen
    Twenty Thirteen
    Twenty Twelve
    Twenty Eleven
    Varia and child themes

Again emails and Reader posts appear in full when they were published in Seedlet. Still waiting for Feedly to catch up and when it does, I’ll set the site back to Private.

Have not tested emails/Reader when the RSS feed is set to excerpt.

    Hope this helps.

It does! I’ll let you know what we find, too, @justjennifer.

  • Noting I’ve added comments to this GH request and am waiting for more info.

Thanks for your patience on this!

@supernovia Thanks for your help! 👍

Feedly also caught up with the RSS feed and shows the new posts in full.

Since it looks like you have what you need for now, I’ve set my test site back to Private. If I have time later this week I’ll publish new posts while the setting for the RSS feed is set to display only an excerpt (though my initial thought is that there won’t be any change in behavior).

    Cheers in the meantime.

  • Perfect, yeah I’ve got some of my own test sites we’ve been working on, so you’re good to go.

Also, they’ve spotted the bug and a fix is on its way. THANK YOU for helping us get to the bottom of this!

    Great to hear. You’re welcome.

Will existing posts be “updated” to reflect the eventual fix?

Looking forward to testing again. :)

  • Hi @justjennifer,

Will existing posts be “updated” to reflect the eventual fix?

That’s something we have to wait and see when the fix is implemented :)

While I haven’t retested every theme, it looks like this issue has been resolved. Thank you!
