layout issue with a post

I just put up a post – http://flinthillstallgrass.com/2008/07/26/happy-cowboy-day/ – but it shows up differently on my site than previous posts. On this post, the “Jump to Comments” box has pushed the image to the left, squeezing the text of the post. If you look at previous posts, that doesn’t happen. What’s up? I deleted everything and started over, but it still squeezes the picture and text to the left. I took out the image and the “Jump to Comments” still squeezes the text.

I would like to remove the “Jump to comments” box altogether.

    Please help.
    Dennis

Check that your image is placed to the right. Now, it is centered.

  • Unknown's avatar

This post is no different than your previous ones: they all appear this way when you click to an individual post. That’s simply the design of the particular theme you’re using.

  • Unknown's avatar

eh, no, it was diffrent- I imagine s/he fixed it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Maybe! But the pushing in by the “Jump to comments” link IS part of the design of Pressrow – I checked it.

  • Unknown's avatar

The photo was inserted on the right, not centered.

I didn’t really fix it, I just moved the photo down to the second paragraph and moved the “Read More” line down a paragraph.

The “Jump to Comments” box is still placed differently in this post. Compare how the text wraps around it in the latest post.

  • Unknown's avatar

aha. But to me, the jump to comment is placed the same in all your posts. I use firefox for mac. The wrap would probably be because you placed the image further down, and that gives you another line underneath it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Which posts should I compare? I’m afraid they all look the same to me.

  • Unknown's avatar

`Maybe! But the pushing in by the “Jump to comments” link IS part of the design of Pressrow – I checked it.’

Then my question becomes: why didn’t the “jump to comments” link push in the text on earlier posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

At the moment you have a total of three posts, right? All three of them display normally in your front page, all three of them get the beginning of their content pushed in when you click the “Keep reading” link or the title of the post. The differences are due to the placement of the images relative to your texts.

  • Unknown's avatar

Not exactly. The third post looks okay (but not what I want), because I pushed the picture down a paragraph. When I had the picture up in the top paragraph, it was pushed to the left by the “Jump to Comments” box. And the picture squished the text to a veeery narrow column. The first two posts are different. The text and the picture are below the “Jump to comments” box and fill the whole column.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hm..I still think it is because you have the images placed diffrently in relation to the lines.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry to disappoint you, what makes the difference in the first two posts is that the images are wider, so at the size you’re viewing your blog there’s just no room for the text: if you zoom out, you’ll see the same thing happening to them.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for the help. But, …
Boblets – I tried placing the images in different places in the text. Even when it was placed in exactly the same place as the first two posts, it was squished to the left by the “jump to comments” box.

Panaghiotisadam – Okay, I put the image in the cowboy post back where I want it, so you can see the difference between this post and the first two. You can see how it is squeezed by the “jump to comments” box. It has nothing to do with the width of the picture – because I’ve tried it in different sizes. It is placed to the right, NOT centered. It’s the “jump” box that is squishing it.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

Apparently you didn’t try zooming! If you zoom in enough, the text in “Happy Cowboy Day” will move under the image. If you zoom out when viewing the other two posts, some text will move to the left of the images.

But better tell me how you’d like the posts to be. Text under the image, perhaps?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have zoomed. Both in MS explorer and firefox. In firefox, zooming changes the text size relative to the image and it’s true that more or less of the text is shown to the left of the image.

    BUT –

Zooming does not change the basic problem with the “jump to comments” box. In the third post, the picture is pushed to the left of the “jump to” box – no matter the zoom level. In the first two posts, the image is all the way to the right and BELOW the “jump to box.” In the third post, the top of the image is at the same level as the Jump to box and the jump to box is pushing the image to the left. In all three posts, the image has been inserted to the right.

I want the third post to be like the first two. I want the text to scroll down to the left of the image and then below it. I want the image all the way to the right side of the column.

    Thanks

Since I don’t seem to convince you, you could try checking the relevant source code for your three posts. It’s the portion that starts with
    <div class="post" id="post-
and ends with the text of the captions.
You’ll see that it’s ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL in all three cases. The third post IS like the other two – the only difference is that its image is portrait shaped while the images in the other other two are landscape shaped. That’s what gives you the impression that they behave differently. Another way you can see they are all the same would be to delete the images and reupload them as thumbnails (again aligned right, of course).

In order to have the image all the way to the right, it has to be below the level of the “Jump to comments” link, and your idea of placing it below the first paragraph of the text was a perfectly natural solution, so I really don’t see what the problem is; in fact, you should apply it to the other posts, too!

Anyway, if you care for a different general solution, you can go to the HTML editor and add this in the very beginning (before the code for the images):

    <p align="none">&nbsp;</p>
    <p align="none">&nbsp;</p>

But this will lower BOTH the text and the image, which means much extra space between the title and the text. You can try it, but I think your solution is better.

Yet another solution, of course, would be to get rid of the stupid link by switching to a different theme.

I’d be a fan of that one.

  • Unknown's avatar

is there any way to keep the theme while deleting the jump to comments box all together?
