Vintage Camera doesn’t have a sidebar: if you need a sidebar, you need a different theme.
You can read about all themes and see them in action here:

I am using the Vintage Camera theme, which does have 3 sidebars listed in the theme CSS. I moved my navigation/widget area (sidebar 1) to the left side and made the position fixed. I don’t know if this will help you, but here is what I did:
.sidebars {
position: fixed;
bottom: -150px;
}#sidebar-1 {
border-right: none;
height: 805px;
width: 450px;
position: relative;
}If this isn’t quite what you are looking to do, open the theme css and look for .sidebar. You should find this:
.sidebars {
width: 780px;
margin-top: 30px;
}
.widget-area {
display: block;
float: left;
width: 29%;
}
#sidebar-1 {
border-right: 1px dashed #999;
}
#sidebar-2 {
border-right: 1px dashed #999;
}
#sidebar-3 {
margin-right: 0px !important;
}I think this is where you want to look to make the changes to accomplish what you are looking for. Hope this helps!

I also set the .navbar to display as none, so it wouldn’t show up in the footer area. I have read that this theme isn’t set up with an actual “sidebar”, so I realize my use semantics/terminology may be a little off. Hopefully I am explaining this in a sensible way to help you get the results you want. I am by no means an expert and am trying to teach myself as I go along.
-
Maybe it would be more accurate to say that I moved the widget area from the footer to the side to make it look like a sidebar. :)

@picturesquekeepsakes: Your CSS suggestion isn’t correct, and anyway awesomesaira doesn’t have the Custom Design upgrade.
-
Thank you all so much for your help. I have to changed the theme for the layout. Never mind, still thank you for your help. really appreciated it!

I wasn’t aware that she didn’t have the upgrade, and again, I did say I am also learning/trying to teach myself. I said I am no expert, actually far from it. My description/terminology may have been off, but the CSS I did provided the results I was looking for on my page. I was just trying to help and will continue to learn how to apply CSS more appropriately. :)
All constructive suggestions are always welcome as I continue to test ideas and learn… Thx -
I know I have a long way to go and will probably refrain from providing suggestions in the future, as to not provide misinformation; unintentionally…

@picturesquekeepsakes: This is a public forum, consulted by millions of wordpress.com users. A reply doesn’t concern only the user that happens to ask it, it is available to all who might look for the same answer, so wrong replies have to be corrected.
It is possible to turn the footer widget areas into a sidebar if you have the Custom Design upgrade, but this would require extensive changes on this theme. Your CSS doesn’t create a sidebar, it only places the widget areas at a fixed point relative to the browser window. It doesn’t even “provide the results you were looking for”: drag the browser window to make it narrower and see for yourself.
-
I actually reorganized things and removed the footer widget from where I had it placed before. Thank you for pointing out & clarifying the difference between what I thought I was doing & what I actually did with the CSS. That makes more sense to me now. :)
I did take your suggestion and saw that everything squished together and became jumbled when I made the browser window narrower. That helped me to understand what you were saying. Thanks!
Would the changes be too extensive for a novice like myself to consider creating a sidebar? It is not absolutely necessary for what I want to do & I don’t want to change themes, but I was just curious (in the spirit of learning).
Thanks again for setting me straight! As I said before, that is the last time I will try and help in the forums. I will leave it up to the professionals! :)

You’re welcome.
There are no professionals and unprofessionals here: if you exclude WP staff (whose responses are the minority), we are all members – fellow bloggers learning from one another (and that’s the great thing about these forums). It’s just that some of us are more experienced and some of us are less experienced yet. You’re most welcome if you’d like to help, but be prepared for corrections when you’re wrong!
( Speaking of “experienced”, check the third paragraph of the intro to this tutorial of mine:
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2012/02/05/introduction-to-html-for-wordpress-com-users/ )The point of the drag-window-to-make-it-narrower experiment is that it illustrates what visitors with different screen resolutions will see.
Yes, the way Vintage Camera is designed makes it rather difficult to turn the footer widgets into a real sidebar if you aren’t very experienced in CSS editing. I can do it, so I might do it if I used the theme, but I wouldn’t bother answering if someone asked for this in the CSS forum. In general, modifying the appearance of a theme that has the overall structure you want is easier than restructuring it; in other words, if you need a sidebar, better select a theme that has a sidebar.
As for the terminology, it’s not your fault, it’s WP’s: Vintage Camera has three footer widget areas, but they are erroneously called “Sidebars” in Appearance > Widgets.
