Lead photo/feature photo appear in post but not on home page

I recently switched to the Gazette theme, and on the home page one of my posts (see below) displays without the lead photo (which also happens to be set as the featured image) but with the headline and pre-‘continue reading’ text. I deleted and reuploaded the photo with the same results; I then resized and renamed the photo to the same effect. All the other posts display correctly, and the image in question appears with the post itself. I’ve seen similar questions, but have not encountered a solution that seems to work for this particular theme or post. Thanks for any help….

    Hmm, this is tricky!

I looked at your site, and I noticed that there was one other post that didn’t have a featured image – Love & Peace for everyone. I would start by looking at your featured image settings for those two posts and see if there is a point of commonality.

Another thing to keep in mind is the featured image recommended sizes: 1920 px wide by 768 px high. Try re-uploading your photos in these sizes and see if they work.

    Hope it works soon!

Also, on your page – do you see the thumbnails?

If not, it could be a problem with your connection that’s preventing all the images from loading properly. Try resetting your modem/router, or try a different connection if possible.

  • I think I see what’s happening :)

You appear to have disabled Featured Images on the front page under My Site > Customize > Content Options, so that is why the Featured Image isn’t showing.

From there, it looks like Gazette was specifically built to hide images that are in the body of the post when the post appears on the home page – there’s a style in the theme’s CSS that hides them.

That style does not, however, appear to apply to images with captions, because they’re styled a little bit differently – so captioned images are appearing, while non-captioned images (like the one in the post you mentioned) do not.

I’m going to look into this a bit on this end – I’m not sure what the expected behavior of images would be in this case – but will post back here when more info is available!

Thanks much for your responses and your tips! So chad1008, you were correct about the Featured Images being disabled. Alas, that didn’t do the trick with the posts in questions in terms of home-page display; but you were also spot on about the captions–I added captions, and the images appeared on the home page.

  • I’m glad adding the captions helped. I’ve reported the inconsistent image display behavior for review on this end. We’ll post here once we’ve looked at it more closely :)
