Leaky Paywall

Hi, Is it possible to install the Leaky Paywall plugin if I purchase the Business upgrade on WordPress.com or would I have to migrate to wordpress.org to be able to install this plugin? Many thanks.

The Business upgrade includes:
• Google analytics
• Footer Credit Options https://en.support.wordpress.com/footer-credits/
• SEO Tools https://en.support.wordpress.com/seo-tools/
• The ability to install most plugins including woocommerce and the ability to install third party themes.

I did know the basics about the business upgrade, but thanks very much for the modlook tip! Best, Annette

Hi there,
You should be able to install that plugin with the Business Plan, yes. Just be aware that any membership plugins on the WordPress.com Business Plan requires members to also sign up via WordPress.com username accounts, so if you don’t want that extra requirement you’ll need to use self-hosted WordPress instead.

It’s listed as a membership plugin in the WordPress Plugin Repository. Most if not all paywall plugins are considered membership plugins, as a subscriber will need to be logged in on the site in order to view the content behind the paywall.
But for the finer points on how it works on this particular plugin it’s best to ask the developers directly:
https://zeen101.com/documentation/
If they confirm that someone needs the “subscriber” user role on the site to access content behind the paywall, then on our end that requires a WordPress.com username account. On a self-hosted site that won’t be a requirement unless you make it one via the Jetpack plugin.

Mmm. Thanks. I keep trying to stay on wordpress.com (and not move to self-hosting) as I like the simplicity of wordpress.com and am a journalist immersed in research and writing. But I do need to find ways of monetising Changing Times so am not sure how much longer I can manage to avoid making the change :-(

There are some other ways to monetize your site besides a paywall. We discuss some possibilities that you can look at here:

Many thanks. I’ll have a think about all this. Have been putting off getting a new domain name as I have been going for seven years with the current one, but may need to do that.
