Learning

I’m not IT savy. But, I just bought a course from Udemy to learn how to use WordPress. My graphic designer is going to build our corporate website on WordPress, but I don’t want to be a helpless passenger; I want to know how to fly the plane – so to speak. The course I bought states the I will have to load WordPress. I assumed that meant that I will have to purchase the software. Please advise. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

To clarify, WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress sites (using software from WordPress.org) are two different entities. To explain the difference, WordPress is free open-source software that is owned by no company or entity. You can download it from WordPress.org and install it on any server for free.

I believe your book is referring to that other version, as it is usually the choice of web designers and developers, as well as advanced users.

Over here, we offer an “already set up” version of WordPress called “WordPress.com” which is the more user-friendly version where you don’t have to install any software or configure your own hosting. You just sign up with us, and we set up your site!

    More info here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

However being a separate version of the WordPress platform means that there can be some differences in the management and capabilities depending on which platform you set your site up on. My guess is that to follow along with your book you will need to use the self-hosted version of WordPress. Our interface here can be quite different.
