Learning WP from an old version :/

I’m learning about WordPress from an older version of the site.
In the online course that I’m using to learn about WordPress, I’ve heard about TypeKit, custom plug-ins, and other features that just don’t show up in the current version. Are they gone for good? Or just hidden under some other menu that I didn’t notice?
Side question: How have you guys learned the ins and outs of WordPress?

There are not and never HAVE been plugins at WordPress.com.
If you’re taking the course from Lynda.com, you need to re-watch the intro videos, particularly 1.2, as it covers this.

I do not rely on any of the books and do not recommend them to WordPress.com bloggers. I have read them all and at best they were marginally helpful. Note also what’s on the interent for “WordPress” is almost always aimed at WordPress.org installs and not applicable to free hosted wordpress.com blogs.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/I learn far better and far faster from hands-on experience than I do from reading books so that’s what I did. I also use search utilities and I have no hestation at all when it comesw to clicking any link anywhere and fiiguring out what the software does when I do that.

I am using Lynda.com. I probably should watch those first couple of videos. But are you sure about the plugins….? I was just watching the video course where the author uses the plugin function. That’s what prompted this question in the first place.@timethief,

I’m familiar with the Lynda videos; the creator is a friend of mine. He says view the intro videos again. Too many people skip them and they’re important.

I definitely watched them, but I wasn’t very familiar with the site yet. Now that I’ve had a chance to apply what I’ve learnt hands-on, the first few videos should make a whole bunch more sense.

Frankly, he is one of the few WP experts who can ALWAYS be counted on to give a presentation that goes at least partially over my head.
