“Leave a comment” clickable despite comments disabled
-
I don’t know if this is a theme problem (my guess is that it isn’t) The following blog post of mine has comments disabled:
http://koitsu.wordpress.com/2010/07/02/dwarf-fortress-or-why-i-stopped-playing/
If you view this post, you’ll see near the bottom that “Leave a Comment” is visible but is greyed out/not clickable. This is not the bug — keep reading.
Now if you view my actual blog:
And look for the Dwarf Fortress post in question, you’ll see “Posted in Dwarf Fortress, Gaming | Leave a Comment”. In this context, “Leave a Comment” IS clickable, and refers to the individual post with the #respond anchor name. In this context the “Leave a Comment” text should be greyed out and not a link to an anchor that doesn’t exist.
What gives?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is an issue with many, if not all themes here and it has never really been addressed although it really should be.
I’m modlooking this and asking them to move it to the “themes” forum so that one of the theme team can see it and respond.

thesacredpath: Thanks, sounds like a long-standing problem. I appreciate the attention!
panaghiotisadam: Trackbacks + pingbacks don’t bother to use the link/anchor in question. If toggling that tb/pings “fixes” the problem, then the underlying PHP code logic for post generation is simply wrong/broken. They’re separate things, even though tb/pings can add comments. Someone at WP needs to figure this out. :-)

Okay, I’ve moved this to Themes. However, note that panaghiotisadam is right. If trackbacks are enabled for the post (they are in this case), then those are considered a type of comment. And that’s why the “Leave a comment” text is linked on the main page even though “comments” are off.
How to handle the language if comments are off and trackbacks are on is another issue. :)

@koitsu This is a fundamental aspect of how WordPress addresses comments, and isn’t related to a specific theme.
Trackbacks/pingbacks are considered comments, and are treated as such. So, in order to remove the “Leave a Comment” text you’ll need to turn off both comments and trackbacks/pingbacks.

Fair enough, though it’s still brain-damaged. Trackbacks/pingbacks do not use that actual HTTP/HTML link with said anchor; those are done differently using an actual XML HTTP POST interface:
http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/docs/mttrackback.html
So, my point stands — the link (on the main blog/index page) shouldn’t render to an that goes no where.

Looks like the reply interface ate my entry. That should have read “shouldn’t render to an {a href} that goes no where”.
