Leaving a comment on other blogs to promote

  I read that leaving a meaningful comment on other blogs helps promote ones blog. How do they know my blog url? Do I need to type it in the comment? That would clearly mean why I may be there?

  It won’t work until you do a couple of things first.

  Go to your Profile page. Under “Website” put your blog URL, the whole thing starting with http. Then hit UPDATE. That way, your name becomes clickable all over WP and when you leave a comment, your name is a link to your blog automatically.

  On independent WP blogs and Blogger blogs, it works a bit differently. You have to put your URL in there.

  Don’t put the URL in the comment itself unless you’re linking to a specific post on your blog, like “You asked for the statistics on the number of wooly scarves produced in Afghanistan each year. I have that breakdown here” and it contributes directly to the conversation. Only do that if it’s something they will say Thank You for. Otherwise it’s cheesy.
