I started my account with Bluehost but did not enjoy the experience. I would like to strictly use WordPress but now I cannot customize any of the themes. I need help. Do I restart my account/profile? What can be done at this point?

  • Hi there,

I currently see two sites in your account, http://thebootlegbookclub.com/ that’s connected here via the Jetpack plugin, but that isn’t currently working – I assume that’s your Bluehost-hosted site – and https://thebootlegbookclub.wordpress.com/ which is hosted here with us on WordPress.com

If you need help with the WordPress.com site at https://thebootlegbookclub.wordpress.com/, can you tell me a bit about what you’re trying to change?

WordPress is the name of the software you’re using to build your site, but that software must always be installed on a server, usually at a hosting provider, like Bluehost. So it’s not possible to use “just WordPress” without running your own web server – there will always be a host, and that host’s hosting control interface as well.

WordPress.com is another host for the WordPress software, but we’re what’s called a managed host. That means we manage some aspects of the WordPress software and your hosting setup for you, i.e. there’s some things we take care of automatically for you behind the scenes, and there’s some settings and customization options you won’t have access to with us. We also use a slightly modified version of the software, so it doesn’t work exactly like the version you’re using at Bluehost.

Among the differences is that for sites hosted with us, you need the Premium Plan to make CSS modifications to your site, and we don’t allow you to modify your theme’s PHP files directly at all – to make that type of customization you need to create a child theme, which can be used on our Business plan.

But whether or not you need one of those options will depend on what exactly you’re trying to customize.
