Left and right arrows missing from slide show
-
I noticed something peculiar when I was viewing my web site on an Android tablet. I have a number of slide shows (carousel format) on my site, and when I hold the tablet horizontally (ie, landscape mode), there are semi-transparent arrows on either side of the current image to go backward and forward. But when I hold the tablet vertically (ie, portrait mode), the arrows are missing. Also, when held vertically, the slide show advances to the next image, whether you tape on the left or the right. Has anyone else noticed this? I’m using Chrome v62.0.3202.84, although I don’t think it’s a problem with the browser.

Hi there!
You can view your site on mobile after disabling mobile theme, if it solves your issue.
If you would like to disable mobile themes on your blog, go to Appearance → Mobile in your WP Admin dashboard and select “No” for “Enable mobile theme” option. All visitors will see the full theme of your blog, but keep in mind this will:
-prevent users on old cell phones from viewing your content
-slows down the display of your site on mobile devicesRead more about Mobile theme here https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/mobile-themes/
Let me know if this helps.
Thanks!

Why would I want to do that? Everything else works fine. I think WordPress should fix the problem.

@dfkettle Hi there, I see your site is using Orvis, which is a responsive layout theme and already mobile friendly. I think what @simranjeetkaur10 might be referring to is the older mobile theme that is used on themes that are not responsive. Sometimes users inadvertently enable that older mobile theme thinking they need to.
If you navigate to https://cuartooscurosite.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=mobile-options you should see a notice that says something like “Awesome! Your theme, Orvis, is already deemed to be mobile-friendly.” and you needn’t enable anything there. If “No” is indicated where it says “Enable mobile theme” then you are good to go.
But back to the issue you describe about missing arrows on the Photo Carousel when viewing from a mobile device, please link to a specific page or post where you are missing the left/right arrows so that we can take a look. Thanks.

Thanks. The arrows are missing from all the slide shows (when viewed on my tablet in portrait mode), but here’s one example: https://cuartooscurosite.wordpress.com/galleries/computer-art/generative-art-series-2017/#jp-carousel-746

I am on a PC running Windows 10 and using Firefox Quantum (FF57) and I can see the arrows in https://cuartooscurosite.wordpress.com/galleries/computer-art/generative-art-series-2017/#jp-carousel-746. Perhaps your issue is browser related.

OK-I can confirm this behavior on my Android phone (sorry, no tablet). I’m also using the same version of Chrome. Additionally, on my Galaxy S4, left/right arrows do not appear regardless of whether the phone is in portrait or landscape orientation.
Regardless, clicking any image, whether to the left or right of the image being viewed, advances the carousel and there’s no ability to reverse the viewing direction.
Since I do not know whether this is the intended behavior on mobile or not, I’ve tagged this thread for Staff attention.

Thanks for your help. I don’t think this would be the intended behaviour. Why would you want to display the arrows when viewing in landscape mode, but not in portrait mode? But you say that they don’t appear in either mode on your tablet? I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4. Is that what you have?
Other than that, I like the way the theme adapts to the device. I’ve looked at my site on two computers, my tablet and my phone, using various browsers. Except for some issues with older browsers, this is the only issue I’ve found so far. Is Orvis supported by WordPress, or is it a third-party product?

Hi dfkettle,
Just wanted to let you know that I’m going to look into this behaviour and will reply here once I’ve done so.
@timethief @justjennifer — thanks for your help with testing :)
-
@gemmacevans Thanks. I was looking at your web site, it’s quite nice. But I noticed the same behaviour when I viewed it on my tablet. The arrows only appear in landscape mode. So maybe this behaviour is normal for all themes. You’re using “Qua”, right?
-
Hi dfkettle,
I’ve double checked on this and our developers have confirmed the behaviour is intended.
On smaller screens like phones and portrait tablets, the arrows are removed but you can still swipe between the images. Space is limited on smaller screens so the arrows are removed in order to give your content the maximum amount of space.
You’re using “Qua”, right?
Correct, I’m using Qua and the same happens there. You will find the left and right arrows are removed on other themes too, not just Orvis.
-
Hi @gemmacevans – Thanks for that. I understood that screen width was likely the issue here, but it seems strange that you can’t scroll backwards through the Carousel images, only forwards.

Hi justjennifer,
it seems strange that you can’t scroll backwards through the Carousel images, only forwards.
Hummm, that’s strange. I tested this using Chrome on a couple of other Android devices but I can’t replicate it. Does your phone try to scroll to the next/previous photo or is it completely unresponsive?
