Left-to-right (English) text in Right-to-left (Hebrew) blogs is mis-directed
-
I run a blog in Hebrew and occasionally include quotes in English. In order to have those quotes shown in the right direction I include an html paragraph order: <p dir=”ltr”>
Some days ago, WP apparently introduced changes to the editor. Among other things, this has removed those direction tags so now there are simple <p> tags instead. As a result, the English text is now bungled. Confusingly, this happened in some posts but not all of them.
For example, here the LTR text is mis-directed: https://amirlicht.wordpress.com/2022/07/18/234/
But here, the LTR text is in the right direction: https://amirlicht.wordpress.com/2022/07/04/233/
This is unacceptable. Please restore those tags or make LTR text directed properly and consistently in all posts.
The problem described here should be relevant to all blogs in right-to-left languages: Hebrew, Arabic, Urdu, etc.
Since WP keeps developing the editor, I repeat an old request: to have direction buttons as in every bilingual editor, asap, so those manual html tags won’t be needed.

Hey @alicht2014, thank you for that feedback. I agree; we should have a text direction in every text-based block. I’ve added your request.
I noticed this one doesn’t have the dir=LTR in it:
There’s an earlier version that had it in place, so I’m wondering — if you add it back in, does it stay? Or, is it being stripped when you edit the post? Please let us know.

Hi Supernovia,
I inserted a dir=LTR tag in this post now. I got a notice “This block contains unexpected or invalid content. Attempt Block Recovery”. I updated the post anyway and it looks OK now.
That’s exactly the point: I have manually inserted a dir=LTR tag in all of my posts that included quotes in English. Now, after the recent changes in the editor, they have disappeared. I need them back :)
Oddly, the sweeping removal of those tags did not affect all posts in the same way. In the other example above – https://amirlicht.wordpress.com/2022/07/04/233/ – I had also inserted dir=LTR tags, they were removed by WP, but the English quotes are still in the right direction – that is, left-to-right direction – even though there is a regular p tag there now.
Please fix this problem.
Thanks

OK, yeah I’m guessing the problem is with new posts or new edits, rather than existing content. Ignoring the warning is a good strategy for now.
We’ve shared this with our developers so they can take a closer look.

Hi,
I wish it were so simple. The problem is that the change you did in the editor has corrupted numerous existing posts in my blog – those that have English quotes. People search and retrieve old posts for research so I need to have old posts fixed as well. Since WP has caused this problem, please fix it asap.
Please advise.
Thanks.

Thanks for clarifying. Our team is investigating the issue now, and while I do not have an estimate for when this will be addressed, I can update you as soon as we know more.
In the meantime, can you point out a few instances of older posts that are displaying English text in the incorrect direction (RTL) instead of the correct LTR direction?
I spot-checked about 15 or so of your older posts (such as this one) and for me English text is in the correct direction. It will help if we can inspect a few where the direction is incorrect so we can determine why some have lost the correct setting, and some have not.
Thanks for the additional info!

Hi,
Thanks so much for looking into this issue. It appears that you are right. I went back over all posts since late 2019. Only in two of them the LTR direction got goofed and I fixed those by inserting <p dir=”ltr”>. Here they are:
Incorrect LTR direction that I fixed manually now by inserting <p dir=”ltr”>אירקלי בישל דייסה – אימתי נושא משרה יידרש לגלות את תוכן הטלפון הנייד שלו?
In all the rest, the LTR direction was correct. The list follows.

I didn’t go further back in time into older posts. There might be wrongly-directed English paragraphs there.
So, perhaps it was a coincidence that I tackled the bad posts [someone asked a question so I looked into them]. The basic issue remains also not as badly as I feared.
Thanks much again. -
Thank you! I filed an issue for the broken-block messaging, and I’ve also nudged an issue about just adding directional settings to blocks in the first place. I can’t say when that would be implemented, but know it’s on folks’ minds. Cheers!
