length of articles

I want to post a long article, but I don’t want the whole of it on the first page, just a part, with a “to continue reading” link.
How do I do that? Thanks.

There’s a button that will insert <--more--> into your post. Press it at the point you want to put the “continue reading”.

That will split the post so that only the first section before the break is shown.

I thought there was an article in the FAQ but I can’t find it right now.

    Found it!

    But wait, there’s more!

    Might help a little more.

If it’s a really, really long article there’s on additional choice you could make too. And if you want the teaser sentence to come from the body of the text, rather than being the first sentence there is a third choice.
The three choices you have are the <!–more–> tag and <!–nextpage–> tag. The latter is a wordpress tag similar to the <!–more–> tag, except that the codex says it can be used any number of times in a post and each will insert a “break” and paginate the post in that location. http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=5790&replies=19#post-37679
I believe this post maybe of help to you. It explains the use of the <!–more–>’ tag, the <!–nextpage–>` and the third choice which is using the optional excerpt field. http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=2322&replies=27#post-41078

The nextpage tag is theme specific though.

  • Unknown's avatar

yes, much to my dismay. =(

Sulz, if you’re around, I fixed the issue you were having at the *cough* other site. It is theme specific.

Can anyone confirm that the customized <!–more–> tag linked to by cornell above *does* allow a post to appear in RSS feeds in its entirety? That is what Vivian Paige said in the comments under the announcement. (Or are there any updates on whether this has been fixed with the regular <!–more–> tag?)

  • Unknown's avatar

I use the <!–more–> tag frequently and where I place it is where the rss feed stops.

“where I place it is where the rss feed stops.”

TT — What’s your thinking on this? Is the typical person reading via RSS willing to click through to the blog if they’re interested in reading the rest of the article?

This duplicate posting thing going on today in forum posts is making me feel very witchy. The slow down you move too fast is making me feel witchy too. {hmmm .. where did I leave my electric broom *lol*}.

    Please see below

I think we can all become overly weird about this “they won’t click” refrain. The blog that I use most more tags in is an environmental digest. It contains very little of my own opinion expressed in the posts. The readers know where I’m coming by the slant expressed in subject matter I chose to post.
The readers themselves have neglected and overflowing feedreaders just as I do so I do not overburden them with volume. This is a hint to anyone on my friend surfer – please use the “more tag”.
Using the teaser and “more tag” means that rss subscribers can quickly home in on the posts they want to read in full and click to read the rest. I have received emails thanking me for changing the format.

Interesting. I may start using it. Thanks.

I, on the other hand, have received specific requests to change it from Partial to Full Post, and my Feed readership has doubled since I made the switch.

Sorry to revive this thread. As far as I can see, the more tag continues to cut off the post in the RSS feeds. And while I’d like to avoid its use, I don’t like the entire post showing up in the feeds all the time. Unfortunately, some of the aggregators that I belong to require the Full post setup instead of the Partial post setup. So for the most part, I don’t use the more tag often and I have my feed set to Full.

    Agreed.

    @Vivian
Since I last posted above in January I have taken another tack and come full circle. I set my feeds to full a couple of weeks ago and I rarely use the “more tag” anymore. Both my blog stats and feed reader stats immediately increased. As for the tag surfer I rarely ever use it these days.
