Length of snippet in pingbacks, tracbacks?
-
When I write a post that links to a post on another blog is there a way to control the length of the snippet that appears in the comments on that external blog
-
on an *external* blog? one that isn’t yours?
My sense is no.I’ve had people reproduce entire posts of mine on other blogs, and other than emailing them and asking them to politely not do that, there wasn’t much I could do.
Once content is on the web, it’s largely out of your control. (and this is why I spend so much time telling my students to think before they post :)

Edited: Thanks to drmike :)
Optional Excerpts for Trackbacks
When creating a post you can enter an alternate excerpt for trackbacks. On the write post page look below the image uploader for “Optional Excerpt” it’s just above “trackback”. -
-
I have answered the OP’s question on alternate excerpts on trackbacks above.
@membracid
If you wish to reduce the ability of others to use your rss feeds to scrape the contents of whole posts off your blog you can reduce the output of your feeds from “full text” to “summary”.->Options -> Reading
Syndication Feeds
Show the most recent:__posts
For each article, show:
__Full text
__Summary
Note: If you use the <!–more–> feature, it will cut off posts in RSS feeds.

thanks timethief. So anything I post in “optional excerpt” will be used as the trackback text. Even if the optional excerpt text does not contain the actual link that is being tracked back to?
Is that correct?
-
Yes, I do believe that is correct. I believe I recall other threads in the forum search box that indicate this. Perhaps you’d like to search and confirm but, it seems to me that if my post had been in error then, drmike would have corrected me.

In my case, they clearly did a copy/paste. It was an organic gardening site that was using something I wrote about bees. Without attribution :(
I was understanding him (her?) to be asking about how *someone else* styles a track back on their blog. Interesting! I’ll be interested in how it turns out.
-
timethief – I tried entering text in the “optional excerpt” box – but it was ignored on the linked blog…

I’m sorry to say that I can offer no further help with this. Support is closed for the weekend, except for dealing with urgent matters. If another blogger cannot help you then you will have to wait until Monday and send a feedback into staff for additional help. -

I think it doesn’t change trackbacks that have already occurred, just ones in the future.
-
Oh yeah, for sure. Although I didn’t say that I thought it was understood that it’s not retroactive.
-
yes I understood it was not retroactive.
Raincoaster – you mean you think it does work? Because I tried it and it didn’t for me….could I have messed it up somehow?
-
If you tried it and it didn’t change a thing, maybe it’s messed up. I just know it won’t change trackbacks that have already happened.
