Letter f deleted from words in posts

  • Unknown's avatar

    The letter f is deleted in words on the web page but appear correctly as typed when writing or editing the posts. Such as “A significant number” appears as A ‘Signiicant’ number. Find appears as ind, etc. I tried deleting and re-typing the words – the f is still deleted.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,

    It looks like I can’t have a look at your website as it sets as private. Are you able to show us a screenshot of what you can see, or make your website public for a while?
    If you don’t know how to do both of these I can guide you through the process.

    Alternatively, you can add “modlook” to the tags for this thread to let WordPress.com staff know that you need assistance.

    Cheers :)

    I appear to be having this same issue with the letter f, and I posted on the forums recently.

    For example, “irst child” should say “first child” in the second sentence of this post: https://passionschmitz.wordpress.com/2015/08/03/a-look-at-suffering-for-beauty/

    I posted earlier today too (https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/characters-displaying-in-wrong-order?replies=2#post-2545527)

    In my case the letters ‘if’ and ‘lf’ are reversed displaying as ‘fi’ and ‘fl’. So ‘finding’ is displayed as ‘ifnding’ – weirdly if I copy and paste it comes out correctly.

    In my case, if the font (Merriweather sans) is changed in the customizer back to ‘default’ then it displays OK.

    Yes, thanks to a tip from Afifah, I changed my font from the default font in the Ecto theme to Source Sans Pro font, and now my f’s are better.

    Another point: the problem with my blog only shows up on my mac and iPad (safari) but display properly on my PC (using chrome).

    Also: I’ve just tried several other fonts from the customizer and all other fonts are displaying OK. Is the problem you are having with Merriweather sans font only?

  • Hello there,

    Glad to see you managed to sort the issue in a way of another.
    Anyhow, I’ve flagged this thread to Staff attention as they may want to run some checks on the Merriweather font et cetera.

    I changed some of the posts to public. I want to change them back to private as this is still a learning exercise for me. Also, on the Wilderness Part Two post, the font changed. I have no idea if I somehow changed it, and if so, how I changed it. Duh.

    Thanks for the clues – “fonts from the customizer” and “Ecto theme”. Apparently, in my customizing experiments I did change the font from the default. When I changed it to default, it took care of the font change. from previous posts. Not sure if the ‘f’ problem resolved with it.

  • Hi @ellymae1,

    You can change the visibility of a post from the post editor, by looking at the Publish box on the right. There’s a visibility option (an eye icon) to click. It has three options: Public, Password protected and Private.
    Click on ‘Private’ and hit the Update button to validate the change.

    I can see from here, though, that your whole blog is set as private, and that doesn’t allow me to look at the chunk of text you said has the font changed.
    To set the blog as public, go to Dashboard>Settings>Reading and under Site Visibility select one of the options between Allow search engines to index this site and Discourage search engines from indexing this site. They both make your site public but allow/block search engines to fetch your site. That’s up to you. Don’t forget to click the Save Button at the very end of the page to validate the changes.

    Happy to help you on the font thing once I can have a look at that :)
    Alternatively, you can link some screenshots of what you see to get me an idea.

  • A glitch with liguatures (like fl and fi) was introduced in the Merriweather font a few days ago. According to the font’s developer, a fix will be pushed through to Google Fonts today (Jan. 25) in the morning, Pacific time:

    https://github.com/EbenSorkin/Merriweather/issues/16

    Temporary workarounds include:

    1. Add the following custom CSS, if you have access to the upgrade:

    html {
      -webkit-font-variant-ligatures: none;
      -moz-font-variant-ligatures: none;
      font-variant-ligatures: none;
    }

    OR,

    2. In your Customizer’s Fonts panel, choose another font.

    I’m closing this duplicate and will post any further updates in this master thread. Feel free to click “Subscribe” in the right column if you’d like to get email notification of new posts in the thread.
