Letting Domain and Hosting Expire?
-
What happens to my site if I don’t want to renew the hosting and domain name? Also, what if I simply don’t renew hosting but I keep the domain name?
Basically, I’m happy having a .wordpress.com site going forward… I’m simply wondering where all the writing will go. I did this once with blogger and it simply converted into a .blogspot.com which was handy. Is that how it works here as well?
WP.com: Unknown
Jetpack: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
What happens to my site if I don’t want to renew the hosting and domain name?
…
I did this once with blogger and it simply converted into a .blogspot.com which was handy. Is that how it works here as well? The short answer is, yes. If you purchase a WordPress.com plan and a domain, and then down the road decide to not renew them, your site will just revert to a free plan and a _____.wordpress.com URL. You can see the differences between plans here:
https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Also, what if I simply don’t renew hosting but I keep the domain name?
That is possible as well. Your site wouldn’t display the custom domain (it would use _____.wordpress.com). But again, your content wouldn’t disappear. Your site would just revert to the free plan.
Does that make sense? Let me know if not or if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the reply. What if my current domain and hosting is not with WordPress? It’s with GoDaddy and Siteground. Will it still just revert to a free plan? Just checking to confirm I wouldn’t lose the content.
Also, I’m wondering if the content would still be linked within the blog or if I would have a bunch of broken links? Thank you!

Hi there,
What if my current domain and hosting is not with WordPress? It’s with GoDaddy and Siteground. Will it still just revert to a free plan? Just checking to confirm I wouldn’t lose the content
To clarify, you are referring to savvyhistory.com and not https://dyshomeroom.wordpress.com/ yes? I do see that savvyhistory.com is not hosted with WordPress.com and I think it will help if I clarify that we’re not directly connected with GoDaddy, who is an independent company that also offers WordPress sites.
Because of this, if you close your site with GoDaddy it will be lost, we do not have a copy on our end and your GoDaddy site will not revert to a free site on WordPress.com.
The good news is that if you wish you can move the contents of your GoDaddy site here. This will give you a safe place to store the site contents since our free sites are “forever” and we do not remove free sites for lack of payment or anything like that.
You can move the contents of your GoDaddy site over by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-a-sites-content/
Once you make a copy of your content here (using a free “wordpress.com” URL) you would be able to safely close the site with GoDaddy.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for your response.
Yes – I am referring to savvyhistory.com
A few more questions. What if my domain is with GoDaddy but my hosting is with SiteGround. Will the process still be the same?
Also, will the links to the blog within the blog be broken? Or will those links convert as well?
Thank you!

Hi again,
A few more questions. What if my domain is with GoDaddy but my hosting is with SiteGround. Will the process still be the same?
More or less the same. Essentially you would want to make sure you have a copy of your site here on WordPress.com before ending service on both.
Also, will the links to the blog within the blog be broken? Or will those links convert as well?
Links will not convert in this case; if you cancel the domain then it’s not possible to set up redirection anymore. To do that you need to keep the domain active. What we usually recommend is you keep your old domain active for at least a few months and point traffic to the new site (at it’s new WordPress.com URL) to give folks time to update their bookmarks and for Google to update it’s listings.
After that you can then safely deactivate the domain, but if you want a lasting redirection you really need to keep the domain active to be able to do so
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much for your help! I simply want to clarify the words “move” vs. “copy” in the context of my situation.
Since my hosting ends Oct. 15th, but I am potentially selling my domain name (will keep it if it doesn’t sell by Nov. 4th), I want to confirm that I can make a copy of my site on wordpress.com that will exist independently of what I decide to do otherwise.
I think this is a great option by the way, but before I follow the directions offered in the link above ( You can move the contents of your GoDaddy site over by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-a-sites-content/ ) I want to confirm that my other website will stay up and running the same until I make those decisions with those other companies (GoDaddy and SiteGround).
A backup site sounds like a great idea and great place to store the writing. Thanks!

Ah, yes, we tend to use move and copy interchangeably in this regard. :)
You can copy your site over to WordPress.com by following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/import/#self-hosted-word-press-org-site
This won’t affect your old existing site unless you connect your domain to the new WordPress.com site, which is an optional step.
Please let us know if you have any more questions!
