Letting friends know about my blog
-
I woulld like to notify friends and family that I have a new blog. Do I send a one time mass email? My goal is to let thm know and leave it up to them to subscribe or not.
What URL do I provide them, the “shortlink” or the wordpress.com link?
Thank you
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I am assuming that the blog is the one linking to your name: http://bakersoliscohen.wordpress.com/ (not always safe I have found out the hard way) – so here it goes.
You have a “subscribe button” on your blog – this is good, friends can easily follow what you post. Use the plain in the open URL starting with http. Send the email to your friends. Have a sentence or three why you have started the new blog. Send only to those that you think will not be offended (you know your friends better than I) – not everyone in your address book probably cares.
Then don’t be a pest.
Good luck

PS – The above is MY opinion only based on my limited experience and that of a few of my friends. Also if you have friends with blogs, sometimes they will add links to your new blog.

There is no means of mass emailing to a list at wordpress.com. You will have to do that yourself. Either link will work but IMO if you use the complete URL rather than the short version it’s more likely your friends will remember the blog URL.
You can set up blog subscriptions and add a blog subscription widget to your blog. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/blog-subscription-widget/ and http://en.support.wordpress.com/subscriptions/
You can also add official users who have various roles to your blog but be careful about role selection. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/ and http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

Thank you for this advice. I am confused about Mike99632’s comment, “I am assuming that the blog is the one linking to your name: http://bakersoliscohen.wordpress.com/ (not always safe I have found out the hard way) – so here it goes.”
Does this mean the URL should not have any reference to my name? Please explain since I am very new at this.
Thanks again.

Sometimes people show up here with questions abut a self hosted WordPress .ORG blog (around 20%++ of the time) and not a blog hosted on WordPress.COM – and I have not always checked (your name has the link much of the time) – and you name will go to an empty blog etc. and I and others have answered a question – the .ORG questions should be ask on another site – that is why posters are ask many times for a web site beginning with http to make sure they are asking in the right forum.
Just a way of making sure people are in the right forum – sorry for the confusion.
The WordPress software has some differences between the two versions, making the answers way different – see http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ for some of the differences.
I have both flavors of blogs.

PS – nothing wrong with your name or URL – pay not much attention to that sentence of mine –
On a more general URL note – I prefer ones that are easy to remember – I can’t spell very well so long ones are a problem for me.
Good luck with your blog.
