Letting pro lapse for a few months

  • Unknown's avatar

    Greetings all!

Our pro subscription ends soon, and we’ve been fairly inactive for a bit. We’re looking at restructuring the blog.

If we let the subscription lapse, and then reactivate when we have the flow re-established (probably in a few months), will I have to do all the customizing again? Or will it come back? How much time do we have between lapsed and losing the look?

    Thanks in advance!

Do you understand that if you allow a domain URL to expire then you no longer own it and someone else can purchase it?

    Allowing a domain to expire
When you allow your domain expire, it then goes through a process that can take several months to complete described at https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/. Please read that support doc.

If you are in the grace period you will not have to agree to pay a redemption fee set by the domain name registrar that wordpress.COM staff cannot waive.

Otherwise, if you want Staff to try to recover the domain for you then you will have to agree to pay the redemption fee.

    Cancelling domains
It is important to know that cancelled domains are not released by the registrar immediately. Also note that here’s no guarantee you’ll be able to use a domain again as it may be sold to someone else. Therefore you should cancel a domain, if and only if, you are sure you do not wish to use it again.

    Hi!

I’m not allowing our domain to expire. I’ve been a webmaster over 20 years and I have URL paranoia. I’m letting our “premium” level of WordPress expire. Our main site isn’t hosted on WordPress. Just our blog.

    Thanks though!

  • Hi @creativediscoverymuseum,

If you decide to not renew your plan, your wordpress account will be switched back to the basic ‘free’ plan. The additional features of Premium plan will not be available. The blogs and data will still be there though.

You can refer to this short article I found-

Hi there, hope you don’t mind me adding something off-topic to this discussion.

I noticed that your site at cdmfun.wordpress.com is using a very old and retired theme, Retro-fitted.

Retired themes are no longer updated or debugged and do not use WordPressdotcom’s latest features. The theme itself does not look to be responsive, so it could actually be hurting your rankings in search engine returns. At some point you may want to look at updating your site to a newer theme regardless. https://wordpress.com/themes/

If you’d like theme recommendations, you are welcome to post to the Themes forum or as long as you have your upgrade plan, to inquire directly with Staff through the contact form at https://wordpress.com/help/contact Once your plan is removed, your query will be routed to our public forums.
