Liberating defunct domain name
-
I’m trying to get in touch with WordPress to request that they liberate a domain name that is currently attached to a site that has been inactive since 2012. The ‘Happiness Engineers’ are proving elusive and I’ve been redirected here to seek help for this, so if anyone knows how I could go about asking WordPress to free up this domain, that’d be great
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there,
We need details please.
1. What is the domain URL?
2. What is the underlying .wordpress.com URL?
3. Exactly which username account registered the underlying .wordpress.com blog and purchased the upgrade for it?
4. When was the upgrade purchased?
5. When did cancellation take place?Deleting a site with upgrades https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/#deleting%C2%A0a-site-with-upgrades
I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. I believe I misunderstood you the first time I read your question and responded to it.
If you are referring to an inactive site URL that you did not register then read on please.
There’s a process for the site owner to transfer the blog to another account http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account
However, one has to leave a comment on the site or use the contact form where provided to request that. Note that in these cases the blog’s owner rarely responds to comments or to contact information and there is no expiration date on .wordpress.com blogs unused, reserved or otherwise.
Moreover, Staff will not breach the privacy policy and provide you with an email address.

https://en.support.wordpress.com/private-information/If there is no response you can register another .wordpress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/
Then if you wish to you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade because it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is when you are domain mapping.

Thanks timethief, you’re quite right the second time – it’s not my own blog. I’ve left a comment on the person’s blog now asking them to transfer it to me, so hopefully they’l take note of that
