Libretto Theme: Possible Bugs, or Suggestions

I use the Libretto theme for a website that I’m designing (it’s not quite ready yet so it’s still set to private). I really like the theme and don’t particularly want to change it, but there are some issues. I’m not sure if they’re bugs, or intentional, so either this is to alert you to an issue or to suggest a change to the theme.

Firstly, quote marks are shown weirdly when the font is bold, italic or the word by the quote mark is a link. The closing quotation mark looks like the opening quotation mark.

Secondly, the box under the comment section which allows people to subscribe to the blog looks like this:

It views fine on my phone, but looks like this on a computer.

I know the first issue is a theme-dependant issue, but I’m not sure about the second one. Is this something to do with my device, or is it a bug?

    Thanks in advance :)

  • What’s the URL of the site? We’ll still be able to see it, even though it’s private.

  • Thanks! I looked at the site but don’t see any quotations as you’ve described. Can you take a screen shot of what you’re seeing when they appear weird? That can just get added to the site’s media library and we can view it from there.

It can be helpful to scroll around the theme demo to see if something you’re questioning is intentional or not. https://librettodemo.wordpress.com/

Let’s start with that and then we can work on the rest. The comments section is just the standard leave a reply box.

Sorry, I forgot to post the other link. This is the page with the quotation marks:
    https://writingareapoetry.wordpress.com/get-started/
It’s in the first bullet point. The closing quotation mark of ‘log in’ looks like an opening quotation mark. @musicdoc1 mentioned that this happens on other themes, so I wasn’t sure whether it was intentional. I can’t tell from the demo whether it was or not, because from what I can see there aren’t any quotations with bold, italic or linked text.

I understand the comment box itself is fine, but when I click on it, the options to subscribe to the blog and the particular post appear, and one checkbox’s label (the subscribe to the blog) is written differently to the first. I’m not sure if that’s happening for you, but what I’m seeing is in the screenshot I posted at the beginning of the thread.
By ‘just the standard leave a reply box’ do you mean that this is intentional? If it is, I’d like to suggest that the second checkbox’s label has the same format as the first one, as at the moment it looks (in my opinion) a bit unprofessional. That was why I’d thought it was a bug.

  • It’s in the first bullet point. The closing quotation mark of ‘log in’ looks like an opening quotation mark.

This is because the quotes are outside of the HTML tags making the text italic. In the HTML it looks as follow:

    '<em>log in</em>'

If you move those quotes so they’re inside the em tags, it will properly show opening and closing quotation marks.

Opening and closing quotes aren’t actually different characters. In the HTML all that exists is a quotation mark, and it’s up to the browser to interpret what version of that mark offered by the current font should be displayed when the page is rendered. In this case, having those HTML tags inbetween the quotes appear to be preventing the browser from interpreting this correctly.

the options to subscribe to the blog and the particular post appear, and one checkbox’s label (the subscribe to the blog) is written differently to the first.

That is a bug. I’ve reported it to our theme developers to look into, but I’m not able to say how long it might take to fix.
