like buttons not working
-
Hi! I’ve been having a recurring problem with the Like buttons on wordpress sites. I’m definitely logged in, I’ve disabled all adblockers, etc, but when I click ‘Like’ on a page I get a small dialog open and instantly close. If I right click and open in new tab the url is https://widgets.wp.com/likes/#.
Further, if I try clicking like from my reader feed, sometimes it works and sometimes the star swirls and then reverses, and no like is recorded!
This isn’t the first time I’ve had this issue, but try as I might, I can’t seem to fiddle enough with the settings in Chrome to fix it this time (I have no idea how I managed it before, or if I even did anything useful). It doesn’t seem to happen on my mobile, or on Chrome on another computer. As far as I’m aware, the settings of the latter are identical to my main machine.
Any help very appreciated, this is hugely annoying!
Thanks :)

Hi there,
Ad blockers aren’t the only thing that can cause this. Issues with the like button can be caused by anything blocking cookies or JavaScript code on a page, and the fact that it only appears in one browser, on one computer, confirms the issue is with your browser.
Make sure that Chrome allows both third party cookies and JavaScript code. Also disable all browser add-ons to see if that helps. If it does, re-enable them one at a time to determine which one is causing the problem.
From what you describe happening in the Reader, it sounds like it can also be an issue with the network request not going through. Try flushing your computer’s DNS cache as well to see if that helps, and unplug your modem/router for a few seconds to clear it’s cache.

Hi, thanks for trying, but none of this has helped. I use the same Chrome account/extensions on multiple computers that don’t have the issue. Tried disabling them all anyway, and nothing changed.
Javascript is allowed. No setting for 3rd party cookies, but I removed my cookie blocker anyway. Didn’t help.
Flushed the DNS. Reset the router. Nothing works. Incredibly frustrating!

Ah. Might see the issue – well, thanks Chrome, and thanks WordPress:
A cookie associated with a cross-site resource at <URL> was set without the
SameSiteattribute. It has been blocked, as Chrome now only delivers cookies with cross-site requests if they are set withSameSite=NoneandSecure. You can review cookies in developer tools under Application>Storage>Cookies and see more details at <URL> and <URL>.Although that doesn’t explain it working on other computers.

The
SameSitecookie is not the issue here. I see that same message in the console on my end, and everything works fine.Have you tried clearing the browser cache or logging in in incognito mode?

Hi, I am having exactly the same problem. Trying to like this post:https://photobookjournal.com/2020/08/17/regina-anzenberger-shifting-roots/ logged into my @helenrosemier account.
I have tried your suggestions above but it is still not working.
Should I clear all the cookies listed in the storage section in developer tools? I have several items for
Wordpress.com
widgets.wp.com
public-api.wordpress.comThanks for any help on this – it is really frustrating!

Glad it’s not just me.
I logged in in incognito mode, and that seems to work. It’s not a fix, though – I expect WordPress to work on my chosen browser, even if I have to change a setting somewhere. But hopefully that’s a clue to what’s going wrong?

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.
-
Google Chrome Version 84.0.4147.135 (Official Build) (64-bit)
1. Cache and cookies cleared – no change
2. All extentions/add ons disabled – no change(some of the first things I’d tried, tbh)
-
Thanks folks. Just to confirm, if you try in another browser, does the issue go away?
Just trying to figure out whether to chase after browser issues or start working through other possibilities.

I logged in in incognito mode
The fact that this worked typically does point to a browser setting / bad cookie or cache / conflicting extension, so hopefully we can help you pin it down.
Testing in another browser may be revealing too.

Other browsers seem okay, in fact Chrome on another pc (still in my account, so same extensions, etc) seems to be okay.
Thanks for helping try to track this down. It’s extremely irritating, especially as I know it was an issue in the past that was ‘solved’ but I have no idea how!

If Chrome on another PC also works, it means this is a problem with that specific installation of Chrome, likely with a specific setting somewhere in the configuration.
See if creating a new user profile in Chrome helps, or else consider resetting Chrome to default, or even completely reinstalling it to see if that helps.
