Like counters suddenly go to zero
-
Hello,
I’m the editor of the multi-language blogpensieritaglienti.wordpress.com
I have the annoying problem that often my Facebook like counters reset to zero, without me changing anything. Now, I already did some research, and I found this useful topic
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/facebook-like-counter-on-posts-reset-to-zero-2?replies=14
where shawnajroberts showed to an user the way to restore the previous number of likes. Well, I tried myself this method … and sometimes it does work, sometimes it doesn’t!! For example, it doesn’t work with the page
http://ilcolibri.altervista.org/webtraining/le-otto-canzoni-piu-belle-dei-pooh/
whose like counter, some days ago, unexpectedly dropped from 125 to 0.
When I go to the Facebook developers debugger
https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/
and submit my page, it finally shows three URLs, each one with a certain number of likes. The second of these URL does have the correct information, that is, 125 likes, but when I select the button “FETCH NEW SCRAPE INFORMATION” as Shawna suggest, unfortunately the like counter doesn’t return to 125. Now it displays 32 because, in the meanwhile, other users liked and shared the post.
Is there a way to catch that number? This is kind of eating me, because the correct information is there, but I don’t know how to retrieve it!
And, besides that, is there a way to avoid the like counters suddenly going to zero? Is there some plugin avaliable that makes the Facebook counters more stable? I’ll be very grateful to anyone who will help me with this issue.
Thanks in advance, and kind regards.

Did you remove the Publicize app?
Are you aware that only the shares made on the post itself are recorded and appear as a number?
The shares made on social network sites are not reflected as wordpress.COm has no access to that information.I typed modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question. I’m sorry, the exact name of the blog is http://ilcolibri.altervista.org/webtraining/, some time ago I migrated it.

Sorry but that site is not hosted by wordpress.COM. Our support docs do not apply to it, and we do not provide support for it. You are posting to the wrong support forum.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.

Thanks for the quick reply and information, I’ll try to post to the wordpress.org forum. However, by using the method described in the post I mentioned above
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/facebook-like-counter-on-posts-reset-to-zero-2?replies=14
sometimes I did actually manage to restore the correct number of likes. But it didn’t always work.

Hi there,
As @timethief has indicated, you will need to post in the WordPress.org forums for help with this as we cannot help with a self-hosted site.
But just to briefly explain what’s happening here: The code used to create the button on your site fetches the number of shares/likes from Facebook based on a post or page’s URL. If the URL changes, for example if you get a custom domain, or even just use an http URL vs a https URL, Facebook doesn’t have the share count for that specific URL, only the original one.
With a self-hosted site like you have you might be able to use a plugin to fetch the count for all the variations in the URL, but I’m just guessing here. You’ll need to ask in the .org forums about that.
On WordPress.com we are not able to show the counts for other URLs than the one you’re using at the moment.
